The Casper Star-Tribune is no longer delivered in Powell, but a Panther wrestler’s feat still made the paper’s top ten list of sports stories in 2010.
Auston Carter’s fourth state wrestling championship was seventh on the list of top sports stories in Wyoming.
Carter became only the 13th Wyoming High School wrestler and the first Powell Panther to win four state championships when he won a hard-fought 3-2 decision over Tyler Smart of Wheatland.
The Powell Lady Panther basketball team also earned a mention from sports writer Clint Robus in his look back at the year. Robus, who is completing his first full year at the Star-Tribune, listed their double-overtime contest with Jackson in the state finals as one of his memorable moments of the year.
In addition, former Powell coach and administrator Ron Laird, now director of the Wyoming High School Activities Association, was listed as one of the top newsmakers in Wyoming for his leadership in next year’s re-classification of Wyoming High Schools and the bringing of all the state’s football championship games to War Memorial Stadium at the University of Wyoming.
The Star-Tribune’s top-ten list was headed by the changes in the Mountain West Conference. Colorado Rockies star Todd Helton’s three-game rehab stint with the Casper Ghosts was second and the Gillette College women’s rodeo team’s win at the College National Finals Rodeo competition was third. Also ranking ahead of Carter’s story were the state shot put and discus records set by a Natrona County High School Lady Mustang, Douglas High School’s 31st straight win for their third straight football championship, and the third-place in bareback riding by Mills cowboy Kelly Timberman at the National Finals Rodeo. Timberman, coincidentally, is also a former Wyoming State wrestling champion.
Ranked behind Carter’s story are the death of a Wyoming football player in an automobile crash, the Cowboys terrible football season, and the advancement of the Casper College womens basketball team to the final four in the National Junior College Athletic Association tournament.
