Two tough games face lady Trappers

NWC hoops at home this Friday, SaturdayThe last time Northwest College women's basketball coach Janis Beal saw her team step onto the court against an all-star team, the Trappers roared to a 19-0 lead and won a lopsided victory. While she'd welcome a similar start this Friday, Beal also knows her team likely has its work cut out for it.

“They'll be a challenge,” Beal said of the Eastern Idaho All-Star team her 3-5 Trappers face Friday night to begin play in the Big Horn Federal Shootout. “This is a team with a lot of collegiate experience, including former Division I players.”

Glancing at the Eastern Idaho roster reveals three former BYU Cougars as well as a former Idaho State Bengal. The squad also features players who suited up for Eastern Oregon, the University of Great Falls, Ricks College and the University of Montana, Western.

“That's a lot of former college experience,” said Beal. “All-Star teams are always kind of scary, because you're never really sure what you're getting. There's no scouting, no game film that you can watch. You're never really sure what they're going to run until they throw the ball in the air, so you kind of prepare for everything.”

On Saturday, the Trappers face Snow College, looking to avenge a defeat from early in the 2010-2011 season.

“I don't think we played our best when we were there earlier this year,” said Beal. “Plus, with so many of our players being from Utah, a lot of them know the players on the Snow roster. It is a game that means a little more to them.”

The weekend will be a special one for fans as well. Shootout sponsor BIg Horn Federal will hand out free Northwest College T-shirts to the first 100 fans through the door for Saturday's game.

“We're trying for the white-out concept,” said Beal. “We're hoping people will wear their Trapper shirts and create a good atmosphere for the game.”

Kids 12 and under get into the games free and will get the opportunity to put their name on a ticket both nights. Drawings will be held for the chance to step on the court at halftime Friday to shoot for prizes. On Saturday, basketball and poster giveaways will be held.

“We really appreciate the help of Big Horn Federal in bringing in teams and for the opportunity to have activities,” said Beal.

“Hopefully this will get fans out who haven't been to a game in a while. I hope they'll like what they see and come back.”

Both weekend games for the NWC women tip off at 5:30 p.m. The Trapper men's team will also be in action both nights as well with games starting at 7:30 p.m.
