Swimmers prepare for conference meet

It was the last home meet for the Powell Lady Panther swimmers, and they honored their seniors by taking a win 100-80 over Worland at the Powell Aquatic Center last week.The meet produced one new state qualifier for the Lady Panthers when Brittany Christensen knocked more than 1.5 seconds from her time in the butterfly to earn her trip to Gillette. Alyssa Smith added a qualifying time to her resume in the breaststroke.

The Lady Panthers took an early lead when Smith, Korrie Kalberer, Anya Tracy and Jessica Wurzel teamed up to win the medley relay, and the B team, Emily LaPlante, Rachel Bright, Lydia Allen and Claire Wetzel finished third.

Maddy Jones followed up with a win in the 200-yard freestyle. Christensen and Paige Driver added points to the team score as well, finishing finish fourth and fifth. Tracy and Allen followed by finishing third and fifth, respectively in the individual medley.

Worland's Michelle Reutter won the 50, but Lady Panthers, Monique Zorgati, Belen Quillen, Baxter Heinert and Kalberer took the next four places to extend the team lead. Emily LaPlante and Hannah Sweet earned second and third place points in diving.

In the butterfly, Jones finished second behind Lady Warrior Kristen Kennedy, and Christensen's qualifying time was good for third.

Reutter won her second first place in the 100, but was again followed by four Lady Panthers. Zorgati finished second followed by Jessica Wurzel, Sarah Wurzel and Driver. Wetzel, Katelyn Lang and Tellese Whitaker finished third, fourth and fifth in the 500.

The Lady Panthers won their second relay in the 200 relay when Tracy, Quillen, Jones and Zorgati edged out Worland by .15 seconds. Heinert, Sweet, Sarah Wurzel and Alyssa Smith finished third as the B team.

Tracy and Quillen finished one-two in the backstroke, and Wetzel finished third. Smith's time in the breaststroke was good for first, and Lang and Rachel Bright finished third and fifth, respectively.

Worland edged Powell by just over one second to with the 400 yard relay, thanks to a fast anchor leg by Reutter. Jessica Wurzel, Quillen, Zorgati and Jones settled for second and the B team, Driver, Whitaker, Sweet and Hannah Cordes, finished third.

Saturday, the Lady Panthers traveled to Lander for a six-team preview of this week's conference meet.

Zorgati had the best finish for the Lady Panthers in the meet, taking first in the 200 and she added a third in the 100. Tracy swam to second in the butterfly and took sixth in the individual medley.

Powell earned another second from the 400 relay team of Smith, Quillen, Zorgati and Jones, and a third from the 200 relay team of Tracy, Quillen, Zorgati and Jones. Smith, Kalberer, Tracy and Heinert finished fourth in the medley relay.

Jones earned fourth in the 50 and fifth in the 100. Quillen finished fourth in the 500 and fifth in the 200. Smith was fifth in the backstroke and eighth in the 500 and LaPlante was fifth in diving. Wetzel and Sarah Wurzel each grabbed a ninth place, Wetzel in the 500 and Wurzel in the 100, and Lang earned 12th place points in the breaststroke.

Final team scores were not available on Monday.

This week is a big week for the Lady Panthers as they will host the West Conference meet in Powell. The meet will be the last chance for the Lady Panthers to qualify for state, and they will be preparing accordingly.
