Panther power beats the Buffaloes

Accuracy and power helped the Powell Lady Panthers to a volleyball win over Greybull Tuesday night.Steady play both on the back line and at the net by Powell were too much for the 2A Lady Buffaloes, and the Lady Panthers won the match in three games, 25-17, 25-13, 25-18.

Greybull kept the score close in the first game, but couldn't deal consistently with Powell's hitting, and the Lady Panthers pulled away for the win. Powell continued to dominate in winning the second game, and built a 9-1 lead early in game three before Greybull rallied to tie the score at nine. The Lady Panthers built another lead, but Greybull put together a couple of short streaks to stay close before Powell pulled away for good. The match ended with on a tip by Olivia Rogers that eluded Greybull's front line and dropped in for match point.

The Lady Panthers' accuracy from the service line was a big factor in the win. The team served with 91 percent accuracy for the match. Kadi Cooley, who led off the match by serving two of her three aces, was 100 percent accurate with her 16 serves, and Kendra Ostrom was 12 of 13 with four aces. Hannah Groves contributed four aces and Randi Asay two.

The Lady Panthers were equally effective at receiving Greybull's serves. Coach Cindi Smith said she had not completed her defense's statistics yet, but said neither Groves and Rogers had made any errors in receiving serves.

Rogers also made two unassisted blocks in the match and Asay made one. Each of them had an assisted block as well, and Liz Tilley had two assists. Smith noted several apparent blocks by the Lady Panthers were negated when net fouls were called on Greybull.

Rogers and Asay led the Lady Panthers attack at the net. Rogers recorded 17 kills out of 28 hitting opportunities, and had no hitting errors, Smith said. Asay recorded 8 kills, and Corianne McKearney four.

Smith praised her team's effort and said they were making progress. All six starters played effectively in the match as did her bench players.

“Our kids on the bench are ready to come in and contribute,” Smith said.

Thursday (today) the Lady Panthers face a big test when they travel to Cody for their first conference match-up. The two teams met in a tournament match in Riverton that opened the season, and the Lady Panthers won the best of three matchup, 25-13,25-23. But Cody won the Montana-Wyoming Challenge the next week and finished third in the Rawlins Invitational last weekend. The Fillies lost their first conference match to Worland last week, and will be looking to even their record.

“It will be a challenge,” Smith said. “It's in Cody, so we have to play our best game.”
