Two Powell Lady Panthers started their season by qualifying for the state swim meet Saturday in the first varsity competition at the Powell Aquatic Center.Maddy Jones opened her final season as a Lady Panther by qualifying in the individual medley, and junior Anya Tracy earned her spot at state in the backstroke. Tracy finished second with her swim and Jones third.

Jones nearly qualified in the butterfly as well, finishing third in the event and coming in a bit more than a second slower than the qualifying standard. Tracy also came close to qualifying as well while finishing third behind Jones in the individual medley.

Belen Quillen and Alyssa Smith also swam to second-place finishes. Quillen's second came in the 200-yard freestyle and Smith's in the 500. In addition, Quillen earned a fourth in the 50 and Smith was fourth in the 200.

Other third-place winners included Courtenay Zorgati in the breaststroke and in diving, where she was competing for the first time. Freshman Baxter Heinert finished third in the 50 and Sarah Wurzel opened her sophomore season with third in the 100.

Finishing in fourth place were Brittany Christensen in the butterfly, Claire Wetzel in the 500, Heinert in the 100, Lydia Allen in the backstroke, Korrie Kalberer in the breaststroke and Hannah Sweet in diving. Fifth place winners were Christensen in the 500, Wurzel in the individual medley, Emily LaPlante in diving, Lindsey Kindred in the backstroke, Katelyn Lang in the 50, and Lori Hetzel in the breaststroke.

Rounding out the team scoring were the three relay A teams. The 400 yard relay team of Tracy, Smith, Quillen and Jones earned the team's only first place, while the medley and 200 relays finished second. The Powell B team finished second in the 400 relay and third in the 200 relay to add team points.

Buffalo swimmers won all but one of the 12 events, with Sam Bell, Mara vonHolst and Hannah Chapin accounting for six individual wins, but coach Luke Robertson said he was happy with the performance of his swimmers, who were missing several teammates, including state placer Monique Zorgati and state qualifier Jessica Wurzel, for the meet.

Robertson said he was especially pleased with the freshmen, and said he expects to see them make progress as the season develops.

The Lady Panthers will compete in the Cody Invitational on Friday. Swimming begins at 2 p.m.
