Cowley youth qualifies in three events for nationalsCowley's J.R. Vezain captured the 2010 Wyoming High School rodeo boys' all-around title and earned the right to compete in three events at the High School National Finals Rodeo later this summer. Vezain is the defending high school national champion in bareback riding. Not surprisingly, it was Vezain's skill in that event that helped fuel his all-around title during the 2010 season. Vezain was the 2010 state bareback champion, amassing more than 3,000 points during the high school rodeo season in that particular event.

Those points represented nearly half of his season total of 6,018 points. Vezain finished roughly 850 points ahead of his closest challenger for the title. This marks the second consecutive season that Vezain has captured the state all-around title.

The top four performers in each rodeo event on the Wyoming High School circuit are eligible to compete at the HSNFR. This year, the national championship event will be held in Gillette. The competition takes place July 18-24.

Vezain could be busy once that competition begins. In addition to earning a place in the national bareback field, Vezain also qualified to compete in both saddle bronc and bull riding as well.

Vezain placed in the top three of both disciplines during the season. Season scores are determined by taking the 15 best finishes from the 2009-2010 rodeo season for each competitor.
