Pioneers win two of three

Late rally by Jays prevents weekend sweepThe Powell Pioneers blasted Lovell 22-6 on Friday before splitting with the Billings Blue Jays on Saturday in American Legion baseball action. The 2-1 weekend performance leaves the club with a 4-2 record heading into the Memorial Day weekend. Staff ace Scotty Jameson fanned 11 Lovell batters in his first appearance on the hill this summer. He also aided his cause at the plate with a home run and four RBIs. Colter Bostick also sent the ball sailing out of the yard for his second home run of the season and added four more RBIs as all nine Pioneers in the starting lineup accounted for at least one run scored in the contest.

Dallas Robirds added four RBIs and Grant Geiser finished the night with three RBIs.

“We were able to get 21 hits as a team and only struck out twice at the plate, which was a real point of emphasis for us,” said Pioneers coach Mike Jameson.

The lopsided win did not count as part of Powell's conference season, despite coming against a league foe.

“This was just a regular season game for the purpose of the standings,” Jameson said.

On Saturday, the team traveled to Billings for a pair of games against the Blue Jays. Powell won the opener by a 14-8 count, but fell 7-6 in the nightcap to come away with only a split.

Bostick threw 5.2 innings in the opening contest to pick up the victory, his second of the season. Colt Nix got the final four outs in relief to emerge with a save for Powell. Seven players drove in at least one run for the Pioneers.

“It was really a well-balanced game by our batting order,” said Jameson. “Colter did a good job of throwing the ball and we were able to get some runs on the board to support him.”

In the late game, Powell rallied from an early deficit to take a two-run lead into the bottom of the seventh inning, only to watch as the Blue Jays scored three to grab a 7-6 victory.

“We didn't do as good a job at the plate in the second game,” said Jameson. “And in typical fashion when Grant is on the mound for us, we found a way to lose it for him.

“Billings had a pair of base hits in the seventh inning, one down each line, that were maybe fair by a combined six inches. We were that close to winning that game.”

Geiser connected for a home run in the contest, but the Pioneers were hurt by their approach at the plate once again.

“We struck out seven or eight times,” said Jameson. “Our approach at the plate wasn't as good as it had been. We were still able to get runners on base, but we didn't do a good job of driving people home once we had runners aboard.”
