Powell's girls had an oustanding Saturday to rise from fifth to second in the final standings to earn regional runner-up honors. “The kids had a great weekend,” said Powell head coach Scott Smith, who again was named the 3A West boys' coach of the year. “I was really happy with the way the kids came out and performed. We had a ton of personal records and qualified more than we expected. We just had a great meet.”

Trailing Jackson entering the second day of competition, the Panther boys used their overall depth and balance to overtake the host Broncs and pull away for a 27-point team victory, 187-160. Cody placed third with 101 points.

On the girls' side, the Panthers spent Saturday leapfrogging up the standings, but came up eight points short of completing the crime as Jackson claimed the regional title 126-118. The Panthers beat out both Cody (104 points) and Worland (103 points) for second-place honors.

Drew MaGill was a triple champion for the Panthers, racing to titles in the 100 and 200 meters, as well as the triple jump. Kyle Sullivan brought home the gold in both the 110 and 300-meter hurdles. Colby Gilmore outran the rest of the 400-meter field to claim the title.

On the girls' side, Desiree Murray cruised to a title at 400 meters and Kendra Ostrom used her final high jump attempt of the day to grab the title in that event. Both the boys' and girls' 4x400 relay teams also cruised to victory.

In addition to the Panthers' stable of regional champions, Smith applauded several other regional performances.

“Tess Mitchell was fourth in the 3200 in only her second time running the race,” said Smith. “BreaAnn Hollenbeck improved by almost a foot to place fifth in the long jump. Marco Borja dropped almost a full second off his best 200 time. Cameron Bennett dropped two seconds off his 300 hurdle time, and Justin Lynn dropped over seven seconds off his best 800 time to get eighth.”

None of those, however, compared to the 28 seconds that distance runner Bodie Friday dropped to place fifth at 3200 meters.

“In addition, we had nine kids finish in the dreaded No. 9 spot who just missed qualifying,” said Smith. “They were all either their personal records or their second-best performance of the season, so you really can't ask for a better effort from the kids. I just hope we can keep improving through next weekend.”

The Panthers will begin their state track competition on Thursday in Casper. The state championships run through Saturday. The top eight finishers from this weekend's regional meet — or the top four in relay events —earned the right to compete for a 3A title.
