Wind tells the tale in conference gameThe Powell Panthers weren't able to take advantage of a gusting 25 mile-per-hour wind on Friday. Worland was, and that's how the Warriors were able to deliver a 2-0 loss to the Powell girls' soccer program. “We had the wind behind us in the first half, so we had the opportunity to put some goals on the board and we just weren't able to do it,” said Panther coach Brad Hammond. “We probably had four really good chances in the first half and we weren't able to finish on any of them. I'm happy with our effort, but we just didn't do a good job of finishing things.”In the second half, the teams flipped sides and Mother Nature ensured much of the half was played in the Panthers' defensive zone. The Warriors broke the scoreboard deadlock approximately 15 minutes into the second half. Worland added a late goal against a gambling Panther defense. “We were trying to get some people forward to get a goal to equalize things and they caught us in a counter-attack and added a late goal,” Hammond said. The loss prevented Powell from moving out of fourth place in the 3A West standings (see sidebar). “I'm not panicking,” said Hammond. “I still think we're a better team than Worland is and I think we have a good chance when they come up here this weekend. We just need to finish on the chances we get. Hopefully we'll have a little better weather on Saturday. The weather down there wasn't very good.”The Panther girls also fell in the reserve contest, which Hammond said ended with a 3-0 final score in Worland's favor. Powell travels to Lander on Friday for a non-conference game. The team then returns to host Worland on Saturday.
