(Feb. 10, 1908 - April 12, 2001) Funeral services were conducted Monday, April 16 afternoon at First United Methodist Church in Powell for a long-time resident of the Powell Valley, Ethel Emma Wood, 93, who died Thursday, April 12 at the Powell Nursing Home. The Rev. Ron Kapalka officiated at services and burial in Crown Hill Cemetery.For many years, she and her husband, Norman (Pete) Wood, farmed at the west edge of Powell, their lands later developed by stages into housing additions in the northwest section of town. She was born Feb. 10, 1908, in Kiona, Wash., daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Phillips. She started school in Washington, then in 1919 her parents moved to a wheat farm northwest of Billings, Mont. She was graduated from high school in Lavina, Mont., in 1926.To pursue a career in teaching, she graduated from Valley State Teachers College in Valley City, N.D., and also attended school at the University of Minnesota and the University of Wyoming. She taught school briefly in Montana, then taught in the elementary grades in Deaver, Garland and Powell.After her parents moved to a farm at Garland, she married Norman (Pete) Wood in her parents' home at Garland on June 21, 1935. They first farmed in the Garland area before moving to Powell's west end.She was a member of the United Methodist Church. She enjoyed school children, who were always an inspiration to her. She had a great love of nature, especially birds. She enjoyed mountain trips, hiking, fishing and horseback riding. When they were in their 70's, she and her husband climbed into the Clark's Fork Canyon to one of their favorite fishing spots. She also loved square dancing and skiing. She was a long-time member of the East End Club at Garland.Survivors include her husband Norman of Powell; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and two brothers.Pallbearers at the funeral were Tom Churchill, Ed Kleinfeldt, Darwin Franklin, Harry Wilson, Rick Worman and George Moore.For those who wish, the family would appreciate memorial contributions to a charity of choice.
