Lady Trappers add two more conference wins

The Northwest College women’s basketball team collected a pair of conference wins last week. The Lady Trappers downed Sheridan College on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 56-46 at home, and Western Wyoming Community College on Saturday, 83-63 at Rock Springs.

With the two wins, the team now has a conference record of 6-2 and an overall record of 18-6.

NWC welcomed conference rival Sheridan College (11-13, 4-4) to Cabre Gym Jan. 31, and while the game was far from pretty, the Lady Trappers held on for an important conference win.

“Overall, I thought it was kind of an ugly game for both teams, but I guess when you’re talking a Region IX Conference matchup, being able to come out with a win when it’s ugly is a good thing,” said head coach Janis Beal.

After the first quarter, Sheridan College led 14-11. In the second quarter, the Lady Trappers went on a 17-5 run to hold a 28-19 advantage at halftime.

In the third quarter, both teams scored 15 points, giving Northwest a 43-34 lead going into the final quarter of play. The Lady Trappers won 56-46.

“They’re a good team,” Beal said of Sheridan. “They play really hard, and whether things are going their way or not, they are not going to quit. They got a couple kids that can shoot, but overall, Sheridan just plays hard.”

Northwest is averaging 78.2 points per game and Sheridan is averaging 66.7 points per game.

“I don’t [think] either team shot the ball real well,” said Beal.

The Lady Trappers shot 30.9 percent from the field, 15 percent from the arc and 59.4 percent from the free throw line.

The Lady Generals shot 29.6 percent from the field, 31.3 percent from the arc and 40.9 percent from the free throw line.

“I think rebounding was huge for us; I can attribute winning the game to that,” Beal said.

The Lady Trappers outrebounded the Lady Generals 51-28, with Sheridan grabbing just five offensive boards the entire game.

“It was just one of those nights where nothing really got going on the offensive end. Little spurts here and there,” Beal said of both teams.

Lady Trapper Dallas Petties recorded a double-double, finishing with 13 points and 10 rebounds — six on defense and four on offense.

“She was going to the boards aggressively,” Beal said.

Also scoring in double digits was Kira Marlow, with 10 points.

Dani McManamen had nine rebounds (six on offense and three on defense).

The Lady Trappers had 10 steals, 11 assists and and 20 turnovers versus nine steals, five assists and 18 turnovers for the Lady Generals.

“Overall, they gutted it out and got a win so I’m proud of them for that,” Beal said of her squad.

Lady Trappers 83, Lady Mustangs 63

Coach Beal was generally pleased with how the Lady Trappers played in the first three quarters of Saturday’s game against Western Wyoming Community College in Rock Springs.

“I felt like we defended really well. ... We did a great job of keeping their shooters under control, didn’t give them open looks, just really did a good job,” Beal said.

The Lady Trappers outscored the Lady Mustangs 22-13 in the first quarter and at halftime led 46-24. Going into the final quarter of play, NWC led 61-37.

“Fourth quarter, we kind of let up a little bit,” Beal said.

In the final period, Western Wyoming (5-19, 3-6) scored 26 points — including 19 from Lady Mustang Nenna Lindstrom. She finished with 24 points.

However, the Lady Trappers still cruised to a 83-63 victory.

“The concept of our defensive pressure really led to some offensive opportunities for us,” Beal said.

The Lady Trappers had 10 steals to WWCC’s five, and outrebounded the Lady Mustangs 55-40.

“They’ve got some good rebounders on their team, so we knew that was going to be an emphasis going in,” said Beal.

NWC also had 12 turnovers and Western Wyoming had 20.

“We took care of the ball,” Beal said of the low amount of turnovers.

Tayla Sayer led the team with 15 points, while Julynne da Silva Sa and Dallas Petties netted 10 apiece.

Tala Aumua-Tuisavura and Domenica Gomes had four steals each.

“[It was] a good team win,” Beal said. “Everyone got a chance to play quite a few minutes and that came from playing well the first three quarters, it gave everyone the opportunity to step in and play.”

The Lady Trappers shot 42.6 percent from the field, 29.4 percent from the arc and 87 percent from the line.

The Lady Mustangs shot 31.3 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from the arc and 63.3 percent from the charity stripe.

“[I’m] very pleased though with the girls’ effort,” Beal said of the win. “Western Wyoming, they’re playing really well right now. Their record doesn’t show it, but I do think they’re a team that is coming on and starting to play well at the end of the season. So to get a road win at Western is good for us for Region IX.”

The Lady Trappers played at Central Wyoming College Wednesday night, and will host Little Big Horn on Saturday at 2 p.m.
