The Lady Panther basketball team had their longest road trip of the season, playing Pinedale on Friday and Star Valley on Saturday. Powell came away with two wins, beating the Lady Wranglers 39-22 and the Lady Braves 63-57 in overtime.

Powell (12-3 overall) came out in the first quarter to outscore Pinedale (3-14) by a 10-3 margin. By the end of the third quarter, the Lady Panthers had increased the lead to 30-15. They went on to win 39-22.

“Great defensive effort for us on our part in this game,” said PHS head coach Scott McKenzie. “We did a really good job on the boards in this game.”

Powell had a total of 46 rebounds in the game — 29 on defense and 17 on offense.

Rachel Bonander had a busy night for PHS, netting 21 points and pulling down 15 boards (eight on offense and seven on defense) for a double-double.

“[I] thought the girls did a really good job of getting things set up for her [Bonander], getting her good nice shots,” coach McKenzie said.

Bonander also had three assists, three steals and three blocked shots.

“Just a really good game for her all around,” coach McKenzie said.

Maddy Hanks had nine boards (four offensive and five defensive) and Katie McKenzie had four.

Ashtyn Heny had two assists and a steal.

“It was nice to get a little confidence on the regional floor and to get a little confidence against the team hosting regionals in case we should play them,” coach McKenzie said.

Pinedale will host the 3A West Regional basketball tournament March 1-3.

Against Star Valley (7-7) on Saturday, the Lady Panthers wouldn’t see their first lead of the game until overtime. They hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to tie the game, then outscored the Lady Braves in the extra frame for the win.

“Star Valley came out hot; they could not miss,” coach McKenzie said.

The first five possessions for the Lady Braves resulted in scores.

After the first quarter, Star Valley led 22-14 and they were up 30-25 at halftime.

However, the Powell girls “just kept battling,” coach McKenzie said. “They competed, they believed in each other. They never got rattled.”

At one point, Powell was down by nine points in the fourth quarter; with less than a minute on the clock, the team trailed by six.

The Lady Panthers cut the lead to three and got the ball with 10 seconds remaining.

Hanks made a pass to Karlie McKenzie who sank a 3-pointer at the buzzer to force overtime.

“Maddy [Hanks] did a great job because she found the open girl and Karlie stepped up and hit the three for us,” coach McKenzie said. “In the overtime, we just went right after them.”

The Lady Panthers scored six points within the first minute and a half, going on to win 63-57.

Coach McKenzie described the fourth quarter as huge, as the Lady Panthers scored 19 points.

“Very proud of the girls, very proud of them for competing all the way till the end,” he said.

The Lady Panthers had three players score in double digits.

Bonander led with 18 points, followed by 15 from Aubrie Stenerson — including 11 in the fourth quarter alone. Stenerson also had a double-double with her 11 rebounds — two on offense and nine on defense. Hanks scored 14.

Karlie McKenzie had four steals and three 3-point baskets; Heny had two 3-pointers.

Katie McKenzie had five assists.

Coach McKenzie also said the team “handled the ball really well,” as the Lady Panthers had only 13 turnovers.

In overtime, coach McKenzie said “free throws definitely won the game for us.” Bonander went 4-for-6 at the line and Hanks went 3-for-4.

“A big win for us to win in Star Valley,” coach McKenzie said. “Star Valley is a really great team and we were fortunate to come out of there with a win — and never leading until the overtime.”

The Lady Panthers, ranked No. 4 in Class 3A, will host Mountain View (No. 5) and Lyman (No. 2) this weekend.

“Mountain View will be scrappy. They have some great 3-point shooters; they pressure the ball well,” said coach McKenzie.  “Lyman, they have great size and they have what’s scouted as the best player in the state.”

Friday’s game against Mountain View is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. with the Saturday game against Lyman at 1:30 p.m.

“We’ll gear up and get ready for two great games this weekend — and we’re glad they are at home,” coach McKenzie said.
