Swimmers break five school records, claim four conference titles

The Powell High School girls’ swim team rocked the blocks at the 3A West Conference meet at the Powell Aquatic Center over the weekend, breaking five school records and boasting conference champions in four events.

Fifteen Lady Panthers swam to state qualifying times, with 30 personal best times during Friday’s prelims and 12 personal bests during Saturday’s finals. They also added one new state qualifier, bringing the total number of swimmers who have qualified to swim at the 3A state meet to 16.

Lander placed first with 357.5 points, with Powell placing second with 300.5. Sublette County finished third with 185, Lyman was fourth with 165, Riverton came in fifth with 141 and Kemmerer was sixth with 113.

The four conference champions came in the 200 medley relay, diving, 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke.

The 200 medley relay team of JuliaKay O’Neill, Caitlyn Miner, Rylie Kannard and Aspen Aguirre had a very successful weekend. They swam to a first-place finish in the preliminaries with a school record-breaking time of 1:57.29 Friday. They swam an even faster time in the finals Saturday (1:55.85) to shatter their new PHS record, break the conference meet record and secure the conference champion title. The former 200 medley relay school record time had been set in 1997, with a time of 1:57.92.

Miner claimed the conference title in both diving and the 100 butterfly. In diving, Miner came back after trailing by 0.05 points after eight dives on Friday to win on Saturday with a score of 316.65.

In the 100 butterfly, Miner won the event with a time of 1:03.32, earning her the second place slot on the PHS Hall of Fame board.

O’Neill also took a conference title and broke onto the leaderboard in the 100 backstroke. She posted the second-fastest time in Powell High School history (1:03.19) in the preliminaries, then won the finals on Saturday with a time of 1:04.16.

Kannard swam her way onto the leaderboard in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:05.19 — good for fifth on the PHS list and fifth at the conference meet.

In the finals, Miner broke Powell’s school record with her leg in the 200 free relay, posting a time of 25.36. The old record had been set by Renee Johnson in 1994 with a time of 25.48.

Lady Panthers head coach Bob Smartt said “the high point”of the meet was having freshman Elizabeth Liggett place second in the 500 free finals (6:03.38) and fifth in the 200 IM (2:33.18). Lauren Lejeune became the 16th Powell swimmer to qualify for state in the 100 butterfly prelims with a time of 1:17.32.
