PHS volleyball goes 1-3 at conference duals

Posted

The Powell High School volleyball team went 1-3 at the Conference Duals Tournament in Mountain View on Friday and Saturday.

The tourney featured all eight of the teams in 3A West volleyball — Lyman, Cody, Riverton, Lander, Star Valley, Mountain View, Pinedale and Powell.

In their four matches, the Lady Panthers beat Pinedale but lost to Lyman, Mountain View and Star Valley.

“This weekend was a bit different than usual,” said junior varsity coach Tasha Miller, who filled in with head coach Randi Bonander ill and unable to attend the tournament. “The girls all played really well, especially given the circumstances.”

Friday

The Lady Panthers first played Lyman and lost in three sets, 28-26, 25-18 and 25-19.

Against the Lady Eagles, Rachel Bonander led in kills with eight, followed by Hartly Thorington with seven. Aubrie Stenerson led in digs with seven.

Friday’s second game came against Pinedale, with Powell winning in three sets, 25-20, 25-15 and 25-18.

Both Natalie Ostermiller and Rachel Bonander had three ace serves against the Lady Wranglers, while Thorington and Stenerson each tied for the team lead in kills with seven.

“The first day of conference duals, the girls came out strong and played with energy and confidence,” Miller said. “It was fun to watch them playing hard and working together, even when we got down in the score, their attitudes stayed up and they fought until the end.”

Saturday

The game against Mountain View went to four sets, with Powell losing the first 25-19, rebounding to win the second 25-21, then losing the third and fourth, 25-21 and 25-20, respectively.

“The second day they seemed to not have as much energy,” Miller said of Saturday. “They fought hard against Mountain View in the morning but didn’t quite finish with the win.”

Thorington led in kills with 12. Brook Sweet followed with 10, Ostermiller had six and Rachel Bonander had five. Ostermiller led the team in digs with five.

“Then we met up against Star Valley and our girls had no energy to put up a fight against them,” said Miller said.

The Braves won in three, 25-11, 25-17 and 25-12.

Thorington had six kills.

“It was great to see what the other side of our conference has and what we need to work on to get ready for regionals in a couple weeks,” Miller said of the weekend’s competition.

Powell has a 12-12 overall record and is in third in the 3A West North Quadrant with a 1-2 record.

Today (Thursday) the Lady Panthers will host the cross-county rival Cody Fillies at 6 p.m for a conference matchup.
