Lady Panther swimmers compete back-to-back

Posted

The Powell High School girl swim team dove into the pool on back-to-back days over the weekend, taking a close second at the Riverton Triangular on Friday and then third at the Sublette County Invitational in Pinedale on Saturday.

Riverton Triangular

In Riverton, the Lady Panthers finished second with 147 points, three points behind Worland. Riverton was third in the triangular with 126 points.

First place finishes for the Lady Panthers included Rylie Kannard in the 50 freestyle and the team of Elizabeth Liggett, Anna Fuller, Madison Lowery and Kannard in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:59.78.

Lady Panthers head coach Bob Smartt said that Kannard “had an excellent meet.”

Along with finishing first in the 50 free, Kannard’s time of 28.52 was a personal best by almost a second. She swam another personal best in the 100 backstroke, taking third against Ellyse Russell and Juli Warren, both of Worland, who Smartt said are “two of the best swimmers in the state in a time of 1:07.37, which is less than two seconds away from Powell Hall of Fame status.”

Six swimmers posted state qualifying times in six events. Liggett qualified for state in the 200 freestyle with her second place finish with a time of 2:20.98.

Aspen Aguirre took second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:42.64, while Caitlyn Miner also finished as runner-up in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:08.32.

Katrina Twitchell finished third in the 100 freestyle, posting a time of 1:03.89, while Fuller finished second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 6:40.58.

Kannard finished third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:54.79.

Sublette County Invite

In Pinedale, the Lady Panthers finished third out of the eight schools competing with 217 points. Sublette County finished second with 234 and Lander won the invite with 334 points.

“It was disappointing to finish third to Sublette County,” Smartt said. “The team was missing seven athletes due to a state band competition in Laramie and to opening day of hunting season.”

The Lady Panthers were led by Miner and O’Neill, who placed first and second in diving.

Miner also won the 100 breaststroke, posting a time of 1:14.41. O’Neill was second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:06.00. The two swimmers also posted state qualifying times/scores in each of the four events.

Liggett also hit state qualifying times while taking fourth in both the 200 IM (in 2:41.37) and the 500 freestyle (in 6:27.99).

Aguirre qualified in the 50 freestyle with her time of 27.78 seconds while Kannard qualified in the 100 butterfly posting a time of 1:13.50.

“The Pinedale altitude of 7,182 [feet] made it difficult for athletes to record best times, especially in longer, more aerobic races,” Smartt said.

The swimmers are off this weekend and will dive back into the pool Oct. 13 in Cody with the meet time slated to start at 5 p.m.
