On Monday, the Powell Little League Junior All-Star baseball team will host the opening round of the state tournament, playing Big Horn at 6 p.m. They’ll play at the juniors’ field, just west of the field used by the Powell Pioneers Legion team.

Manager Matthew Lengfelder said the team has a lot of speed and athleticism but will have to play to compete against Big Horn on Monday by limiting their mistakes and walks.

The remainder of the state tournament will be held in Green River. The winner of Monday’s game will face Green River on Thursday, July 20, at 5 p.m. while the loser will play an as-yet-to-be-determined opponent at 5 p.m. on on Friday, July 21.

Last weekend, the Junior All-Star baseball team played in a tournament in Riverton, beating the Riverton Babe Ruth All-Star team 21-11 and Kemmerer Babe Ruth All-Star team 22-13 in Saturday’s games. The Babe Ruth teams were comprised of players ages 13-15; Powell’s juniors are made up of 13- and 14-year-olds.

On Sunday, Powell took down Green River’s Junior All-Star team, 18-9, then lost the championship game to Riverton 7-3. The championship was shortened to only five innings due to the 97-plus degree temperatures the players had been playing in.

The Powell Junior All-Star baseball team is the defending state champion. The winner of the state tournament will advance to the Junior Little League Western Region Tournament in San Jose, California.
