Junior baseball to host community night this Friday

On Friday night, the Powell Little League Juniors baseball team is inviting the community to enjoy a doubleheader against Worland with game times at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.

The Community Night is a way for the team to give back to the community and for the community to “be able to get the community to come out and show some support for them and have a burger and enjoy some baseball,” said juniors coach Matthew Lengfelder. “It’ll mean a lot to these guys.”

At the Community Night, hamburgers and hot dogs will be served by Farmers Insurance Agency.

“I really believe ... these kids need to give back to the community,” Lengfelder said. “They need to find ways to help out their community ‘cause the community will step up and provide donations.”

The juniors baseball team is comprised of players between the ages of 13 and 14. They are coached by Lengfelder and Cory Ostermiller, with help from parents who include Josh Westerhold and Russ Sessions.

“It’s about developing these kids, developing their skills so that they can continue to enjoy baseball. Be able to be put in a situation where they can be successful so they can continue to enjoy baseball and stay with it longer,” Lengfelder said of the juniors program.

There are 21 players on the squad, which is split into two teams, with athletes playing in various positions on both teams.

“This format has allowed us to get kids some reps at several different positions,” Lengfelder said.

The team started practicing in March and started playing doubleheaders once school ended, which is a first for the team. Games started in the beginning of May.

All-State selections will be announced June 29 with the state tournament on July 17-22

“These kids put in a lot of work,” said Lengfelder. He explained that the athletes have been juggling baseball alongside track, soccer and summer camps.
