Dano’lope’ Dash

Close to 90 people ran from the Park County Fairgrounds and around the Powell area on Saturday, competing in the sixth annual Dano’lope’ Dash.

The event was a fundraiser for the Dano Youth Camp, a nonprofit wilderness adventure camp for youth.

Race director Alex Aguirre said the Dano’lope’ Dash has grown every year. Last weekend, 88 people participated by either walking or running 1 mile, a 5K (3.1 miles) or a 10K (6.2 miles). Participants were broken up into different age categories ranging from 0-10 to 70 and older for each distance.

Awards were handed out for each age group in both male and female categories and all children who participated who did not place in the top two, were given a water bottle. There were also 40 door prizes handed out and a brunch served to all participants, spectators and volunteers.

Aguirre, a 2016 Powell High School graduate and a current University of Wyoming student majoring in civil engineering, started the Dano’lope’ Dash in 2012.

“I wanted to help the camp when I’d went the first time; that’s why I started the Dano’lope’ Dash,” he explained. Aguirre was 13 at the time.

“It was a lot at first, but it was learning process — I had help. Definitely a lot of people that helped me out,” he said, adding, “It’s just grown every year and everyone has done what they can and I think it’s been a success every year.”

The Dano Youth Camp was created in memory of Danny Ostrom, who died in an accident in 1996.

“The family wanted to make a positive out of a negative, so they started this camp for youth,” Aguirre said. “The youth go on an eight-day backpacking trip. That’s what the main camp consists of and the camp teaches good life skills and just like leadership skills and then we focus on four main areas which is spiritual, social, emotional and physical.”

Since that first trip to camp in 2012, Aguirre has attended every year since and worked his way up from being a first-year camper, to an alumni, to a counselor in training (CIT), to being a staff member last year and the assistant director of Dano this year.

Aguirre said part of the reason he started the Dano’lope’ Dash was that “it doesn’t cost the youth in Park County to go [to Dano Youth Camp] — it’s completely free to them, so they need a lot of fundraising and grants and whatnot. So I just thought this would be a good way to help support that, to help get the kids to still be able to go for free.”

The camp is open to youth in Park County ages 13-16. If older than 16, youth can apply to be a staff member or a CIT; they don’t have to have any prior Dano experience to be a staff member.

More about the Dano Youth Camp as well as camp dates for 2017 can be found at www.danoyouthcamp.org.

Aguirre thanked everyone who participated in Saturday’s dash, calling it a great race with good weather and a strong turnout.

“I think people had fun,” he said.
