Sixth annual PAC triathlon a fun, welcoming event

On Saturday, the Powell Aquatic Center hosted its sixth annual triathlon.

“We couldn’t have had a better day with the weather,” said race director Tanya Bonner. “Thought it went really well.”

Competitors could compete either solely or as a team and local athletes as well as athletes from a few different states came to compete.

Though there was a drop in numbers, “it was the usual fun lot that always show up every year and they even mentioned that they love coming to this one cause everyone is so welcoming and friendly,” Tanya Bonner said.

Four women competed in the full triathlon.

Tenika Eardley of Greybull won the 26-30 age class, finishing in 1:30.34. In the 36-40 age group, Miranda Wagner of Cody finished in 2:02.32 and Jen Reiter of Billings won the 41-45 age class with a time of 1:14.18. Jessica Drenning from South Dakota finished in 1:50.20 in the 46-50 age group.

Fifteen men, meanwhile, finished the triathlon in the solo category.

In the 13 and under age group, Riley McKeen of Powell finished first with a time of 1:44.52 and Rui Parker of Deaver followed with a time of 2:16.06.

Three Powell boys competed in the 20 and under age group. Alan Merritt finished first with a time of 1:20.12, Mitch Svaty placed second with a time 1:23.21 and Joe Rogers finished third in 1:38.37.

Seth Partenheimer of Cody competed in the 21-25 age group with a time of 1:50.08.

In the 26-30 age class, Tyler Jensen of Sheridan finished in 1:34.42.

Dusty Smith of Greybull finished in 1:17.00 in the 31-35 age group.

For the 46-50 age class, Rusty McKeen of Powell finished in 1:43.08 and Sean Phelps of Billings competed in the 51-55 age group with a time of 1:09.26.

Richard Avoletta traveled 17 hours from Illinois to compete in the 56-60 age class and finished in 1:36.54.

In the 61-65 age group, Jim Thomas-DeJongh of Billings finished first in 1:22.16 and John Housel of Cody placed second with a time of 1:32.15.

Two Billings competitors competed in the 66-70 age group: Cecil Pegram finished first in 1:35.29 and Les Benner followed right behind with a time of 1:35.43.

Those competing in teams were divided into women, men or co-ed divisions.

The all women team of Jeanna Merritt, Ashley Hildebrand and Cathy McKenzie posted a time of 1:25.28.

There were two all men’s teams.

Placing first was Francis Rogers, Landell Meritt and Daniel Merritt with a time of 1:08.22. Dave Blevins and Toby Bonner placed second with a time of 1:47.20.

Three co-ed teams competed.

Placing first was Eric Olson, Tim Baxter and Rinda Eastman, with a time of 1:19.47.

Second place went to a team comprised of Stephanie Liggett, Andrew Feller and Dan Lavy, with at time of 1:22.54.

The third place team of Tasha McKelvey, Robin Nichols and Tanya Bonner finished in 1:28.06.

“Everybody seemed to have a good time and we had two people in this race that were doing this race for the very first time; they have never done a triathlon before,” said Tanya Bonner. “They did well.”
