Powell Swim Club takes third at state event

A total of 546 swimmers across 26 teams descended on Laramie for the USA Swimming Winter State competition earlier this month. A dozen Powell Swim Club members were among the competitors and they finished third as a team in Division III and 20th overall.

The Powell club scored a total of 216.5 points, behind Riverton (245.5) and Newcastle (225) in Division III.

In individual events, Gavin Asay, 17, competed in the male open 100 freestyle, 100 butterfly and 200 IM in the male division. In the 200 IM, Asay finished 20th with a final time of 2:28.28. In the preliminary 100 freestyle, Asay finished 24th with a time of 59.22 and finished 19th in the 100 butterfly preliminary with a time 1:03.59.

Kendyl Bohlman, 17, competed in four events in the 17 and over female division. In the finals, Bohlman finished eighth in the 500 freestyle with a time of 6:41.17 and 19th in the 200 freestyle in a time of 2:26.90; in the preliminaries, she finished 18th in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:04.07 and 15th in the 50 freestyle with a time of 29.30.

Katie Brown, 19, also competed in the 17 and over female division. Brown’s three finals events included placing 11th in the 200 IM in 2:51.78, 10th in the 500 freestyle with a time of 6:53.18 and 20th in the 200 freestyle in 2:35.19. Brown’s other three events include a 32nd place finish in the 100 freestyle preliminaries in a time of 1:09.19, 12th in the 100 backstroke prelim in 1:19.80 and 11th in the 100 breaststroke prelim with a time of 1:28.55.

In the 15-16 male division, Kacey Creed, 16, competed in seven individual events. Creed took seventh in the 100 butterfly with a time of 57.55 — an improvement on his 58.09 time/eighth-place finish in the prelims. He also shaved a second in 100 breaststroke to be runner-up, with a final time of 1:03.72. The other two final placements by Creed were a 16th place finish in the 200 freestyle in 2:00.38 and a fifth place finish in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:32.11.

Creed’s other three events ended in the preliminary rounds, taking 14th in the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.76, 20th in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.05 and 11th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:02.06.

Aaron Harder, 43, swam four events. He placed seventh in the 200 backstroke final with a time of 2:25.00, 19th in the 200 IM final with a time of 2:25.60 and 20th in the 100 butterfly prelim in 1:04.20.

Aaron Harder also swam alongside Creed, Asay and Joe Rogers in the 400 medley relay, for a 11th place finish in 4:18.77.

Grace Harder, 12, swam in the 11-12 female division. She placed 21st in the 100 breaststroke final in a time of 1:31.98 and 25th in the 50 butterfly prelim in a time of 42.20.

Ten-year-old Lucia Harder competed in the 10 and under female division, finishing 15th in the 100 backstroke final with a time of 1:32.59. Preliminary finishes include 18th in the 100 freestyle in 1:18.35, 12th in the 50 butterfly in 42.36, ninth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 33.01 and 17th in the 50 backstroke in 41.61.

Claire Miner, 17, competed in five individual events in the female open. She earned 10th in the 200 IM finals with a time of 2:49.80 and, in the preliminaries, she placed 28th in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:05.78, ninth in the 100 butterfly in 1:12.98, 16th in the 50 freestyle with a time of 29.31 and 11th in the 100 backstroke in 1:16.02.

Francis Rogers, 12, competed in the 11-12 male division. In the finals, he took 20th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:20.73, sixth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:26.17, 17th in the 50 backstroke with a time of 37.17, ninth in the 100 IM with a time of 1:18.65 and fifth in the 50 breaststroke with a time of 37.18 (a 1.81 second improvement from the prelims). He also took 14th in the 100 freestyle in 1:07.89.

Joe Rogers, 16, finished 28th in the 100 freestyle prelim, with a time of 56.88, and 34th in the 50 freestyle prelim in 25.79. He competed in the male 15-16 division.

Gabe Rose, 10, competed in the 10 and under male division finishing 20th in the 100 backstroke finals in 1:38.40 and 22nd in the 50 backstroke with a time of 45.31.

Josh Wright, 14, competed in the male 13-14 age division. In the individual events, Wright finished 11th in the 200 backstroke final with a time of 2:37.46, 25th in the 50 freestyle prelim in 29.21 and 10th in the 100 backstroke prelim with a time of 1:10.64.

Wright, Asay, Creed and Joe Rogers also finished 11th in the 400 yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:58.71.
