Hudson Wilkerson sets school record

It was another great week for the Powell High School boys swim team, as they began the week with a win at Cody and ended it giving defending state champion Lander all they could handle at the Bruce Gresly Invitational in Lander.

The Panthers continued their domination over Cody in a dual meet on Jan. 24, posting a 123-43 win. PHS qualified swimmers for state in four more events at this meet: Garret Henderson in the 100 freestyle (57.33), Joe Kuntz in the 50 freestyle (25.68), Dillinger Wilkerson in the 100 backstroke (1:12.90) and Trenton Wilson in the 100 backstroke (1:11.39). Nate MaGill posted a person best in diving (215.70).

“For the beginning of the week, it was a very good meet,” said Panthers head coach Stephanie Warren. “Sometimes it’s hard to get up and get going and have a meet right off the bat. For the beginning of the week, they swam really well. We’re beginning to fight a little bit of sickness, but despite that, we’re ready to go. They’re doing really well.”

PHS traveled to Lander (winners of the last 19 Class 3A State championships) Saturday for the Bruce Gresly Invitational, taking second in the five-team meet, just three points behind Lander, 337-334.

“Going into the final event (400 freestyle relay), we were actually ahead of Lander,” Warren said. “But it just kind of worked out that they got first, we got second. And that’s how the points fare out. But being within three points of Lander is just an amazing feat for us, it’s just great.”

“We’ve been getting closer and closer to them every time, and it’s definitely going to make the next couple of meets when we go to conference and state with them very exciting,” Warren added.

The invite became a showcase for Panther swimmers, with several more state qualifying times, 14 personal bests and another visit to the PHS Hall of Fame board.

Hudson Wilkerson, who made fifth place on the Hall of Fame board the week before, vaulted into first place in Lander. His 11-dive score of 490.55 points toppled Mike Asay’s record of 430.40, which stood for 42 years.

“Hudson well-surpassed that record with a great score,” Warren said. “There’s a good chance it might stay there for another 42 years.”

Adding state qualifying events at the Bruce Gresly Invite were Jared Fuller and Joe Rogers (the 500 freestyle), Dillinger Wilkerson (50 freestyle) and Wilson (100 butterfly). Wilson’s qualification was unique in that it was the first time he’d ever competed in the event.

Rogers barely missed qualifying in the 50 freestyle, too.

“The qualifying time is 26.5 and he swam a 26.8, so he’s right on the verge of getting that one also, which is a great thing,” Warren said.

Freshman Jay Cox was the only new qualifier for state qualifying in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:18.58 and placing sixth in the event.

“Jay has been very close to qualifying the last two meets, and he was well under a second for the qualifying time,” Warren said. “He definitely stood out for us this meet.”

Gavin Asay, MaGill, Hudson Wilkerson, Alex Hanson, Wesley Patrick and Dallin Allred had personal bests in the 100 freestyle.

Richard Spann, Joe Rogers, Jay Cox and Ben Cannizzaro swam personal bests in the 50 freestyle, while Kacey Creed swam a personal best in the 500 freestyle.

Austen Layton is on the cusp of qualifying for state in the 100 backstroke, swimming a personal best time of 1:32.56.

“Austen has taken some great time off last week, and we’re hoping he takes off more time this week before conference so he can qualify for an event,” Warren said. “He’s working very hard at it and he’s very close.”

Chris Lopez also cut time for a personal best in the 100 backstroke, and Dillinger Wilkerson swam a personal best in the 100 breaststroke.

The Panthers will host Cody today (Tuesday) for the final home meet of the season; it’s also Senior Night, honoring the hard work and effort displayed by the graduating seniors. PHS then heads to Buffalo for a dual meet Friday, then travel to Gillette Saturday, where they will face some stiff competition.

Warren described it as “a huge 4A invite that a lot of times even features out-of-state teams. We’ll get to see how we fare out with 4A teams. It’s a lot different, but it’s a good way for them to swim, facing faster qualifying times.”

“The team is pretty excited to see where they stand in that way,” she said.
