Swimmers continue qualifying trend

Posted

Competing at home on Friday, the Powell High School swim team  continued its state-qualifying ways — adding 10 more events and one more individual. But adding state qualifications was not the team’s only success, as several competitors posted personal best times or scores in the win over Worland.

“I’m still pleased to see that we are cutting time the way that we are,” said PHS head coach Stephanie Warren.

Warren added that the swim team will hit a point in the season where it will become harder to cut times.

“But as of right now, they’re still looking really good and they’re swimming very strong,” Warren said.

Freshman Richard Spann became the first Panther to qualify for the 3A State Meet in all eight of his individual swimming events.

Spann qualified in the 200 freestyle with a 2:07.61, first place finish. He picked up his eighth qualification with a second place finish in the 500 freestyle, swimming the event with a time of 6:04.64. (Those came on top of previous qualifications in the 50 and 100 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 100 butterfly and 200 IM. )

Meanwhile, fellow freshman Ben Cannizzaro qualified in his first event by posting a time of 1:13.16 in the 100 butterfly.

Junior Kacey Creed added two events — the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke — to put his season total at seven qualifications. Creed swam the 100 backstroke in 1:00.33 on Friday, which Warren said is a good time for this point in the season.

Also picking up two more events was junior Jared Fuller, who qualified in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:19.12 (good for a second-place finish) and the 200 IM with a time of 2:30.18 and a third-place showing.

Juniors Gavin Asay and Dillinger Wilkerson each added an event apiece, with Asay qualifying in the 100 backstroke and Wilkerson in the 500 freestyle.

Fellow sophomores Joe Rogers and Trenton Wilson each added the 200 freestyle to their state qualifying list.

Wilson, Rogers and Asay each cut seconds off their 200 freestyle times. Wilson finished second, with a time of 2:09.48. Rogers finished fourth with 2:13.32 and Asay finished fifth in 2:15.24.

Three of Powell’s four divers also posted personal bests. Hudson Wilkerson won with a score of 217.45, Nate MaGill took second with 183.50 (though it wasn’t his personal best), Alex Hanson scored 131.05 to finish third and Bryce Hogen placed fourth with a score of 129.45.

Joe Kuntz and Braden Schiller improved on previous state qualifying times. Kuntz did so in the 100 butterfly, with a 1:04.21 first place finish, and Schiller improved in the 100 backstroke, posting a time of 1:19.12 en route to a fifth place finish.

“We both are just really proud of the boys and the hard work that they put into the season so far,” said Warren. “We just keep looking forward to great things from them every week.”

After the weekend’s performance, the Powell swim team  has 14 individuals qualified for state across 43 events.

As for the overall dual, Powell handily beat Worland, 114 points to 66.

The PHS swim team has two competitions this week: The first is a Friday dual in Cody at 5 p.m. with the second being the Worland Invitational on Saturday at 10 a.m.
