Lady Panthers end non conference season with loss to Bearcats

Powell ranked No. 1 for 3A West North Quadrant

The Lady Panther basketball team gave the state’s top-ranked team a serious challenge on Saturday before falling 50-47 in Douglas.

Powell (5-3) led Douglas (8-0) by three points at halftime, but found themselves in a six-point hole, 34-28, going into the fourth quarter.

“We just turned the ball over too much in that third quarter,” said head coach Scott McKenzie

Powell had a total of 22 turnovers in the game, and nine came in the third period. That helped erase the Panthers’ 21-18 halftime lead.

The Powell girls mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter, shooting 70 percent from the free throw line and scoring 19 points. One highlight was a deep 3-pointer from senior Tayli Stenerson, who took the shot from about 6 feet beyond the arc.

“Thought the girls did a good job down the stretch,” said coach McKenzie “We executed really well.”

He said the team had a chance to send the game into overtime, but it just didn’t work out.

“Overall, was really proud of the girls’ effort,” said coach McKenzie “We had talked a lot about continuing to play harder and I thought we played very hard against Douglas.”

Powell had three players score in the double digits: Maddy Hanks and Dani Asay both tied with 11 points while Tayli Stenerson scored 10; Hanks went 6-for-8 at the free throw line and Asay went 3-for-4.

Karli McKenzie scored four points in the second quarter to get a spark going for the Lady Panthers.

Overall, Powell shot 60 percent at the free throw line (just outside the goal of 65 percent), 52 percent on 2-point tries and 25 percent on 3-point shots.

Tayli Stenerson led in assists with five.

Aubrie Stenerson led with 10 rebounds — four offensive and six defensive. Hanks and Rachel Bonander each had six boards.

“Good measuring stick for us this trip — to go play in a hostile environment and see where we match up right now in 3A,” coach McKenzie said. “And I thought our girls hung with them.”

Despite the loss, Powell led for quite a   bit of the game.

Powell currently has the best overall record within the 3A West North Quadrant. In the WyoPreps.com coaches and media poll for the entirety of Class 3A, Powell is tied in the No. 4 ranking with Worland.

On Friday, Powell will travel to Riverton (0-13) to play at 5:30 p.m. It will be the Lady Panthers’ first conference game of the season.

On Saturday, the Lady Panthers will play at home for the first time this season, hosting Lander at 3 p.m. Lander is also a conference opponent and has a 4-7 record on the year.

“Everything up to this point has been preparation for the next run of games for about a month,” coach McKenzie said of the start of conference games.

It’s the conference games that determine a team’s seeding for the Class 3A West regional tournament, set for March 2-4 in Riverton.
