Athletics to resume action

Posted

The wait is over, sports fans.

With Christmas break concluded for both Powell High School and Northwest College, athletic teams are resuming play this week — including several home games.

Starting on Thursday, the boys high school basketball team will co-host the Big Horn Basin Classic with Cody.

The Panthers will start their tournament at 7 p.m. Thursday against Rocky Mountain at the PHS gym. The result of that game will determine what time the Panthers play on Friday; a loss puts them in a 3 p.m. game while a win will have them playing at 4:30 p.m. Saturday’s games will, again, depend on how the team does on Friday.

The girls high school basketball team will also compete in the Big Horn Basin Classic, but their tournament will be held in Thermopolis and Worland. The Lady Panthers will face Glenrock at 11 a.m. Friday in Thermopolis. The Powell girls will play again on Friday, too. A loss to Glenrock would have the Lady Panthers play at 3:30 p.m. while a win would put them in a 6:30 p.m. game. Saturday’s game times and locations will be determined by the results on the games on Friday.

The PHS wrestling team will compete at the Bozeman Invitational. Matches start at 11 a.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday in Montana.

The final PHS athletic team to resume action will be the boys swimming team, who’ll host the Gene Dozah Invite on Saturday. It starts at 10 a.m. at the Powell Aquatic Center.

Also on Saturday in Powell, both the men’s and women’s Northwest College basketball teams will host Dawson Community College. The women’s game begins at 2 p.m. and the men will play right after, at 4 p.m.

As for the NWC wrestlers, they’ll spend Thursday and Friday grappling at the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Multi-Divisional National Duals in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Nearly 90 programs from across the country will compete at the massive dual tournament, including all 26 NJCAA teams
