Panther wrestlers finish second at home tournament

The Powell High School wrestling team kicked off its season at last weekend’s Powell Athletic Roundtable tournament by taking second place as a team. The squad also had eight wrestlers finish in the top six individually — including two champions.

Seventeen schools came to Powell for the Friday-Saturday event.

Powell’s 207 points were good for second place, just edging Cody’s team score of 205 points. First place went to Natrona County with 295.5 points.

“I thought it was a good weekend,” said Nate Urbach, PHS head coach.

First place finishers included sophomore Reese Karst at 132 pounds and senior Ty Dearcorn at 170 pounds.

Karst defeated a Buffalo opponent who’d beat him last year for the state championship title.

Terrance McLaughlin — a senior who is in his second year of wrestling — finished second at 285 pounds.

Michael Maddox, in the 113-pound weight class, took fourth, as did freshman Brody Karhu at 138 pounds.

Finishing in fifth place was Cameron Schmidt at 160 pounds and Logan Lamb at 220 pounds

Junior Stephen Preator took sixth at 126 pounds.

Seniors Eli Briggs and Zach Easum also had a strong first day at the tournament, but they were unable to compete on Saturday due to ACT testing.

“I thought all-in-all the kids did well,” said Urbach.

Urbach added that he was proud of how the kids performed overall, saying they battled hard. He described his team as hard workers, good kids to be around and enjoyable to coach.

This year’s PHS wrestling team is a young team, with only six seniors and two juniors out of 24 wrestlers. Urbach said he sees this as a year of growth.

Powell’s junior varsity team, meanwhile, finished in fifth place overall with 162 points at the home tourney.

Coming in first was Gillette with 567 points, Sheridan in second with 264.5 points, Natrona County in third with 244.5 points and Thermopolis with 176 for a fourth place finish.

This weekend, the Powell varsity team competes at the Gillette Invitational while the JV team competes at the Worland Invitational.

In Gillette, wrestling will begin at 10 a.m. Friday and resume at 9 a.m. Saturday. At Worland, the tournament will begin at 12:30 p.m. Friday and 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
