For the seventh time in nine years, Powell High School won the 3A state drama championship.

“This year’s competition was a very good tournament for PHS,” said Bob Hunt, head coach. “I am extremely proud of my team and their accomplishments.”

The state tournament in Laramie on Thursday through Saturday drew 23 teams and hundreds of students from around Wyoming.

“We competed with all of the schools and would have tied for first in the 4A division,” Hunt said.

Out of nine 3A teams, Powell emerged on top of the overall sweepstakes; Worland High School came in second and Cody High School followed in third.

The PHS team is coached by Hunt and Jeff Greaham.

Individual results are as follows:

• Lauren Asher: Second place in dramatic monologues and first place in second year publicity design (All State).

• Brooks Asher: Second place in first year scenic design (All State).

• Kenadee Bott: Fourth place in first year publicity design (All State).

On Monday, the team was waiting to hear whether students qualified for the International Thespian Society’s Festival.

“We had several students compete in International Thespian Society events such as monologues, scenes, musical acting events, and group musical acting events,” Hunt said. “A rating of superior or being in the top 10 percent of the state will qualify them to perform at the International Thespian Society Festival in the summer.”

PHS students are auditioning this week for roles in “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers,” which will be presented Feb. 10-11.
