Panther cross country girls take fourth, boys fifth in Riverton

Powell High School cross country ran in their conference meet in Riverton on Friday with the girls placing fourth and having two All Conference finishers. The boys placed fifth.

“It was a nice flat course, a really nice race with minor winds,” said head coach Cliff Boos. “Really impressed with how the race went.”

Emma Andreasen placed third out of 73 runners with a time of 21:54.06 and Kayla Kolpitcke placed seventh with a time of 22:03.41. Placing in the top 10 means the runner made All Conference.

The other top finishers at conference included:

Natalie Dillivan missed the race with an injury, while Emily Sweet was unable to finish due to a popped rib.

As a team, the girls placed fourth with 98 points out of seven teams. They trailed Star Valley who took first with 43 points, followed by Riverton’s 73 and were edged by Cody’s 90 points. Mountain View had 110 points for a fifth place finish. Lyman and Lander took sixth and seventh with 145 and 149 points, respectively.

The Powell boys, meanwhile, took fifth place with 140 points.

Alan Merritt was PHS’ top finisher, placing 15th out of 111 runners. His time was 18:25.09.

Colin Queen was runner-up on the squad, taking 34th with a time of 19:13.87. He was followed closely by Jesse Erickson, who finished 36th with a time of 19:17.78.

Also competing at conference were:

“Great bunch of kids,” said Boos. “They’re working hard. Very supportive of each other.”

Star Valley’s boys ran away with the conference title with 16  points; their top seven runners all finished in the top 10. Cody took second with 64 points with Mountain View third at 71 points. Lander had 96 points for a fourth place finish. Riverton was sixth with 181 points and Lyman was seventh with 199 points.

In cross country, team points come from adding up the places of the top five finishers on each team. For example, the first place runner gets one point for their team, the second place runner gets two points for their team, and so on. The team with the lowest score wins.

Each team can have a total of seven runners in the race. While only the top five finishers count towards a team score, each runner is important.  A team’s bottom two runners can add points to other teams’ scores by finishing ahead of any of their top five races.

Cross country athletes run a 5K, or 3.1 miles.

On Saturday, the Panther cross country team heads to Sheridan for state. A total of 15 teams will compete: seven from the west and eight from the east. The first race will start at 11 a.m.

The top seven finishers for the boys — Merritt, Queen, Erickson, Yates, Waite, Cordes and Shopa — will compete at state with Brazelton going as an alternate. For the girls, Andreasen, Kolpitcke, Faulkner, Decker, Korte, Dillivan and Sweet will all make the trip.
