Powell at home this weekend

The road of tough competition for Powell tennis made its way through Cody on a chilly Tuesday, with not-so-positive results.

“It was a tough day,” head coach Joe Asay said. “The scores speak for themselves.”

The overall scores showed 5-0 Cody wins on both the boys and girls side of the match.

The individual scores weren’t a whole lot better, though there were some competitive sets.

The No. 1 singles through No. 2 doubles competition saw the Lady Panthers get four wins in a set, including Hattie Pimentel going 2-6, 4-6 at No. 1 singles and Jen Bonander and Kaylee Meyer going 4-6, 2-6 at No. 1 doubles. The No. 3 doubles team of Shayla Shoopman and Sloane Asay gave some resistance in a 2-6, 3-6 loss.

Freshman Jesse Brown saw his unbeaten streak snapped against Joe Luedde, falling 1-6, 4-6, at No. 2 singles.

The match of the day was at No. 1 singles, where Panther junior Rhett Pimentel started out strong and took a 6-0 win over Cody senior Zach Ross in the first set. Ross came back in a heated, second-set battle and escaped with a 7-5 win to even the match.

The final set played out similarly, and again Ross was able to hold sway in a tight contest with a 6-4 win.

“That was a three-set battle that had to finish up playing under the lights,” Asay said. “The Cody boys are all seniors, with one foreign exchange student, but all the kids battled well. We just need to work on getting out of the gates more quickly.”

Powell will be at home for two matches this weekend, facing Sheridan at 4 p.m. Friday and squaring off with Campbell County at 9 a.m. Saturday.
