Panther swimmers third at Cody invite

Powell High School’s girls swim team picked up a third-place finish and a couple more state qualifiers at a Friday meet in Cody.

Senior Katie Brown and junior Julia Kay O’Neill became the third and fourth Powell swimmers to qualify for this year’s Class 3A state meet. O’Neill qualified in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:12.76; Brown made it by swimming the 200-yard individual medley (IM) in 2:43.15. Sophomore Caitlyn Miner, meanwhile, also qualified for state in the IM with a time of 2:38.62; she’s now qualified in five events.

Sheridan won the Cody Invitational with 370 points, followed by 207 for Douglas and 202 from the Lady Panthers. Six teams participated.

Although just the second competition of the season, the PHS swimmers posted some of their fastest times.

For example, PHS head coach Luke Robertson noted that junior Kendyl Bohlman was within four seconds of her personal best in the 200-yard IM, senior Beth McCaslin was within three seconds of her record in the 200-yard freestyle and, in that same event, senior Claire Miner swam to within five seconds of her best.

“In my mind, when kids are within that kind of range early in the season, that’s a good sign,” Robertson said.

Robertson also praised his three 200-yard medley relay teams.

“I thought all three of the medley relays that first race out looked really good,” he said. “Good transitions off the blocks; just good swims.”

In addition, PHS’ two divers — O’Neill and Caitlyn Miner — improved on their scores from the opening week.

The coach gave the week’s Pink Panther swim cap — an internal team award — to sophomore Gracie McLain. Part of his rationale was the way McLain cheered on her teammates and congratulated her competitors at the Cody meet while part was the way she’s encouraged her teammates at practice.

Robertson said McLain was doing “just the types of things that you want to see in all the girls, that help keep the attitudes positive.”

The coach said his team continues to take instruction to heart — they “looked a lot better” on their breakouts in Cody — and is uncommonly versatile.

“The nice thing about this group is it seems I can swim just about anybody anywhere,” Robertson said.

The Lady Panthers will compete in a quad in Worland on Friday at 4 p.m. then host a number of teams at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Gene Dozah Invitational at the Powell Aquatic Center.

“I like those back-to-back meets, because that’s what’s conference is going to look like; that’s what state’s going to look like,” Robertson said.
