Cody Cubs cruise past the Powell Pioneers

Posted

It was a tough Tuesday twin-bill for the Powell Pioneers as they dropped both ends to the visiting Cody Cubs “A” team by 7-1 and 16-0 scores.

The opener, actually, wasn’t nearly as lopsided as it may have looked, as it was more a matter of a few misplays that Cody took advantage of.

With Carson Asher on the mound for Powell, Cody pushed across a first-inning run with Keegan Brown leading things off with a ground-ball single up the middle.

Jared Grenz was then clipped by a pitch before the Pioneers pulled off an unconventional double play.

On a Cameron Wright grounder to third, Zavier Wantulok snared it and raced to step on third for the force out and fired across to first in an attempt at a double play.

Wright beat the throw, but when Grenz rounded second and headed for third, Luke Washington threw to third, where Wantulok put the tag down.

The joy of the heads up play was short-lived, however, as Cooper Brown laced one into right center that a diving Teagan Cordes just missed, for an RBI double and a 1-0 lead.

The Pioneers would even things up in the bottom of the first off Cub starter Wright, though, as Ezra Andreason singled to right and stole second base.

With one out, Cordes lofted a bunt over the head of the charging Wright for a perfect placement between the mound and shortstop for a single, putting runners on the corners.

Kaden Moore then made a productive out, grounding out to first but picking up an RBI as Andreason came across the plate.

A couple defensive miscues helped Cody retake the lead in the top of the second.

Parker Shreve started it with a looping liner into right for a single, with the ball then misplayed and Shreve racing to second.

Asher then struck out Dallin Jones looking and got a ground out to third off Brayden Polley’s bat.

But Shreve, now on third, scored on a wild pitch, Trent Bronneberg drew a walk and Brown singled to right-center to put runners on first and third.

A pop-up on the infield might have spelled the end of the inning, with just a 2-1 Cub lead, but on this windy day, the high pop couldn’t be corralled and with both runners off and running with two outs, both came in to score for a 4-1 lead.

From there, Wright and Asher strung up zeros on the scoreboard from the bottom of the second through the top of the fifth, when Cody added three insurance runs.

Keegan Brown worked a walk and with one out, Wright hit a looping liner down the left-field line for a double, putting runners on second and third.

Cooper Brown and Connor McLeod then hit back-to-back RBI singles, with Shreve hitting a grounder to second for a run-scoring out.

The Pioneers kept plugging, and three of their final four outs were on hard contact that just happened to be right at Cub defenders.

“We played a lot better than that score shows,” assistant coach George Laughlin, acting as interim head coach, told the team in the dugout. “We hit the ball well, pitched well, and other than those three tough plays, our defense made the rest of them. Keep playing like that and we’ll be all right.”

But Cody didn’t allow them to keep up that level of play as they took control of the second game early and didn’t let up in the 16-0 win.

The Cubs pounded out 16 hits, including seven doubles and a Wright home run, and scored five runs in the first, one in the second, and a pair of five-spots in the fourth and fifth.

And though Cody didn’t need any extra help, five Powell errors certainly greased the skids, allowing for five of the 16 runs to be unearned.

Looking to bounce back and put this one behind them, the Pioneers will travel to Cody for a match-up with the Cubs “B” team before playing an afternoon double-header at home Saturday against Sheridan at 1 and 3:30 p.m.
