Over the course of the school year, Southside Elementary School students ran 22,443 laps for their annual marathon, which equals 4,489 miles.
“This year’s marathon was awesome,” said Waleryan Wisniewski, who teaches PE at Southside.
This year, 201 Southside students qualified for the marathon.
To qualify, kindergarten and first-grade students had to run a total of 12 miles throughout the school year.
The benchmark for second-grade and third-grade students was 18 miles. Fourth-graders and fifth-graders had to tally 25 miles.
In the kindergarten to second-grade category, Amie Lundberg’s first-graders won a class award for running a total of 1,467 laps or 293 miles. For third- to fifth-grade, Michelle Giltner’s fifth-graders won a class award for running a total of 1,898 laps or 380 miles.
The following students ran the most miles for their grade level:
• Kindergarten: Kourtnie Ashcraft and Landon McDonald
• First-grade: Charlie Wolf and Tanner Seifert
• Second-grade: Kate Williams and Casen Gines
• Third-grade: Emily Orr and Cody Seifert
• Fourth-grade: Maya Landwehr and Chance Franks
• Fifth-grade: Gabi Paterson and Holden Cooper
Wisniewski thanked all the teachers, teachers’ aides, sponsors, Powell Volunteer Fire Department, Powell Police Department, City of Powell, Scott Schiller and Erin Beavers for their help, as well as the students who participated and qualified.
