Panther’s soccer boys make state

Posted

While their Panther brethren were in Casper vying for state placements at the Track and Field Championships, the Powell soccer teams were in Worland Friday trying to reach their own state tournament.

In a win or go home scenario, the Panthers of the pitch each took on the teams from Newcastle, though the Powell girls were sent home by the Lady Dogies in a 3-0 loss.

Hope had perhaps been buoyed by the fact that the Lady Panthers had played Newcastle nearly even in a 1-0 loss at the Worland Tournament in mid-April.

But the Dogies found a little extra to carry them through to the 3A state tournament where they will face Torrington.

The Powell boys allowed their season to continue on as they powered past Newcastle by a 7-2 count.

The Panthers wasted little time in taking control of this one, with Brian Crawford putting one into the net 11 minutes into the match.

Just five minutes later, T.J. Abraham slipped one past the Dogie keeper and Alex Aguirre made it a 3-0 lead in the 19th minute.

The scoring saw a slight lull, of 16 minutes, before Trey Ouellette scored twice within two minutes to boost the margin to 5-0.

Newcastle would get on the board just before the half, but the tone had long since been set.

Abraham and Ouellette added scores in the 67th and 70th minutes before the Dogies put one in with three minutes left.

“We’ve been finishing a lot better and putting a good amount of shots on frame towards the end of the season,” head coach Travis Rapp said. “If we can keep it going and get on a good run at state, you never know what might happen.”

It was certainly the sort of win to give a team ample momentum, and the Panthers hope to keep it going when they face off with Lander on Thursday.

“We feel like we have a good draw,” Rapp said. “We have Lander, Cody and Star Valley on our side of the bracket.”

During the regular season, Powell went 1-2 against Star Valley, with 2-0 and 3-2 losses and a 1-0 win, while they dropped a 3-2 match against Lander at the Green River tournament.

Against Cody, the Panthers lost both contests, but went from a 4-1 loss in early April to a 3-2 loss on April 30.

The Wyoming State Soccer tournament takes place on the soccer fields at the Big Horn Equestrian Center near Sheridan and Big Horn, with the Lander-Powell match-up scheduled to start at 11 a.m. Thursday.
