Powell tennis takes on Cody

The spring season for tennis is more about gaining experience and working toward improvement for the regular season next fall than wins and losses in the now.

And though the Powell Middle School players had their hands full against Cody Monday, they gained that valuable experience and were able to notch a handful of wins as well.

Ryley Meyer and Noah Blough were able to pull out a 5-3 win against the Lil’ Broncs No. 1 doubles team of Danny Deming and Porter Laing, while Danial Rasmussen and Seth Horton cruised to a 7-1 win in the No. 2 match-up against Hayden Damaranville and Tyler Schmeiser.

It was another close match at No. 5, with Powell’s Joey Mickelson and Heidi Barrus edging out Sage Crofts and Tori Ramson by a 5-3 score.

Then, at No. 9, Sophie Morrow and Ashley Dunkerley put up a 7-1 win against Taylar Williford and Jayde Larsen and Kortny Feller teamed with Lydia Lang to topple Cody’s Maya Snyder and Kaitlyn Polley 8-0.

The tennis Cubs were able to come away with five, 4-4 ties on the day as well, two coming from the doubles team of Grant Dillivan and Dallin Allred.

Also notching ties were the duos of Brilee Keeler and Chantay Hernandez, Morrow and Dunkerley along with Augusta Larsen and Jami Martinez.

The high school Panthers picked up seven wins in their 20 matches against the Broncs and Fillies, with a few of those losses coming by just two games.

In singles, Rhett Pimental got an 8-3 win over Cody’s Evan Wambeke and Kaylee Meyer topped Olivia Hobby by an 8-4 score.

Both Hattie Pimental and Tessa Eller held on for narrow 8-6 wins in their respective matches.

Three wins were picked up in doubles action, as Aidan Hunt and Derek Lynn went 8-3 over Nakoa Brown and Mark Bullerdick, Adam Hartman and David Bright got the better of Luke Campbell and Takota Hammond by an 8-1 score and Jenifer Bonander and Demi Dusenberry won 8-4 over Becky Lipps and Brissa Mata.

In close losses, Claire Miner and Emily McCaslin were two games shy of victory, but fell 5-7 to Chloe Baker and Ruby Woods.

Similarly, Nicole Sanders and Katie McKenzie fell two shy, 6-8, to Hannah Schutzman and Tatum Bass.

The real nail biter, though, came in the match between Powell’s Mikel Peterson and Donny Riley against Cody’s Luke Campbell and Takota Hammond, where the match was even up at 7-7 before the Broncs duo eked it out with a win.

The match concluded Powell’s spring schedule, with the Panthers now looking ahead to the fall season.
