One Powell High School girls basketball player cracked the All State team and two others — plus their coach and a member of the boys squad — have been honored within the conference.
On Monday, the Wyoming Coaches Association named PHS senior Breanna Donarski as one of the top players in Class 3A, putting her on this season’s All State team. Fellow PHS seniors Danna Hanks and Richelle Phister joined Donarski in earning All Conference honors for the western half of the class.
Donarski finished the year averaging 9.8 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.7 steals per game; Hanks averaged 8.8 points, 9.1 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.4 steals; and Phister averaged 6.6 points, 2.3 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.7 steals.
“Those coaches saw that those three girls all did their things at different times,” said PHS head coach Scott McKenzie, saying it’s difficult to get three players recognized.
For Hanks and Donarski, it was their second straight year joining the All Conference team.
Over on the boys side, PHS senior Kristian Stenlund also earned All Conference recognition from the coaches association.
Stenlund led the Panthers in averaging 11.9 points, 1.7 assists and 1.7 steals per game this season; he also collected an average of four rebounds per game. Stenlund’s steals ranked him as the sixth-best thief in Class 3A West, according to statistics compiled by WyoPreps.com.
Meanwhile, for the second year in a row, McKenzie was named as Class 3A West’s girls coach of the year.
McKenzie said he was told by his fellow coaches that they respected the Lady Panthers’ strong season — including going 9-1 in the conference — despite losing two All State players last year.
McKenzie said it was neat to get the award, but “it’s the girls that make you look good.”
He also praised the “great job” done by his assistant coaches, Troy Hildebrand and Gary Phister.
“All that they do makes you look good as well,” McKenzie said.
