Park County’s girls hockey team wins second straight state title
The Park County Ice Cats girls hockey team claimed their second state championship in a row, and third in the last four years.
The No. 2-seeded Ice Cats upset No. 1 Rock Springs with a 3-2 win in the championship game in Laramie on Sunday.
Park County took a 2-0 lead thanks to goals by Jessica Shankle (3:32 of the first period) and Powell’s Lauren Asher (second period). The Miners cut the Ice Cats’ lead in half with a third-period goal by Taylor Pingrey, but Shankle stretched the lead back to two goals with a score at the 10:44 mark in the third.
Rock Springs scored two minutes later, but the Ice Cats held on in the final minutes to preserve the championship.
Goalie Kayla Kolpitcke made 28 saves in the win.
Park County reached the title game with a 6-3 win over the Laramie Outlaws on Saturday. Ice Cats captain Lauren Folker scored a hat trick while Kam Harris, Tosha Aiken of Cody, and Shankle each added a score. Kolpitcke stopped 24 of 27 Laramie shots.
The Ice Cats opened the tournament with a 7-2 win over Cheyenne on Friday. Asher and Shankle each scored a hat trick. Powell’s Hattie Pimental assisted on one of Shankle’s goals.
Asher and Kolpitcke were named to the Wyoming Amateur Hockey Association’s All-State team, as selected by Wyoming coaches.
