2015 YEAR IN REVIEW: Girls win first title

In a year of continued streaks, fast beginnings and triumphant finishes, a long-awaited first may have trumped them all.

For the first time in school history, the Powell Panthers girls basketball team reigned supreme in Wyoming.

The Powell High School girls claimed its first ever Class 3A title with a 58-52 win over the Lovell Bulldogs.

After Lovell beat Powell 45-41 for the Class 3A West title, the Panthers entered state with a vengeance and embarked on a three-game journey to the top.

“The thing that I was most impressed with was that these girls — they meant business, I guess is the best way to say it,” PHS head coach Scott McKenzie said of the girls’ three-game run to the title.

Senior Jenni Ebersberger scored a game-high 21 points, followed by Kalina Smith’s 11 points and team-best seven rebounds. Danna Hanks and Dani Asay each scored seven points while Megan Wagner added six points and six rebounds.

The Panthers (22-4) flexed their defensive muscle in a 31-14 semifinal victory over Mountain View that McKenzie said could go down in history for the wrong reasons. The first half ended with Powell up 5-0

“We just couldn’t make any shots; Mountain View couldn’t make any shots,” McKenzie said. “We actually had to kind of giggle about it in the locker room.”

The offense picked up in the second half, but the Panthers still outscored Mountain View 26-14.

“Our girls just played great defense,” McKenzie said. “It was a different kind of a semifinal, but a win is a win.”

The offense needed no time to warm up in Powell’s first-round victory against Worland.

The Panthers sprinted out to a 15-0 lead on their way to a 51-37 win.

“We spent a lot of time with those young ladies and we’re just so happy for them,” McKenzie said. “Happy for the girls, happy for the school, happy for the community.”
