My Auto wins softball title the hard way

Posted

It took three wins in one long night of softball, but My Auto battled back from the loser’s bracket to take the title at the Powell Recreation District Men’s League Softball Tournament.

My Auto trailed Woodward Tractor & Rental 11-8 in the sixth inning of the July 21 championship game, but they pushed across six runs in the inning’s top half.

My Auto made the lead stand up for a 14-12 win.

Heading into the tournament, My Auto had the best regular season record (10-3) among the Powell league’s eight teams.

The squad opened the tournament with wins over Red Zone and WYOld West Brewing Company to reach the semi-final contest. However, Woodward Tractor dealt My Auto a 15-4 loss in that July 16 game, forcing the team to take the long route to the championship.

To start July 21, My Auto first had to face Maverik. They prevailed 14-9, sending Maverik to a third-place finish and propelling My Auto to a rematch with Woodward Tractor.

My Auto initially appeared as though they might win the game in a laugher, piling up 11 runs in the top of the first inning and leading 14-1 going into the bottom of the second.

However, Woodward Tractor came roaring back. They scored six runs in the bottom of the second and nine runs in the bottom of the third to knot things up at 16-all.

After My Auto and Woodward Tractor each put up a pair of runs in the fifth inning, My Auto’s Jason Showalter broke the 18-all tie for good with a two-run home run in the top of the sixth.

My Auto held on to win 20-18 and, because it was Woodward Tractor’s first loss of the tournament, force the deciding championship game.

That second My Auto-Woodward Tractor game ended shortly after 10 p.m., wrapping up close to three-and-a-half nearly uninterrupted hours of softball for My Auto.

The rec league softball season began in late May.

Here are the final records for the entire season from the Powell Recreation District — though inconsistent scorekeeping from players means some of the records are not quite right:

My Auto: 14-4

Woodward Tractor & Rental: 12-6

Cody Seamless Siding: 11-6

WYOld West Brewing Co.: 7-9

Maverik: 8-10

Fremont Motors: 4-9

Powell Tribune: 3-12

The Red Zone: 1-15
