Top pro riders in the world compete at Cody Stampede Rodeo

Posted

The Buffalo Bill Cody Stampede rodeo paid out $348,402 in prize money to some of the top riders in the world over the Fourth of July weekend.

Chuck Schmidt from Keldron, South Dakota, took home $8,657 for winning the saddle bronc event with an 87-point ride on Frontier Rodeo’s Tip Off.

“It was a dang good horse and it worked out,” Schmidt said. “I felt like I would get bucked off at any second. He got some rein, so I had to keep hustling and set my feet — I never got a real secure feeling.”

Schmidt was sixth in the world for saddle bronc riding with the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, but had some rough rides prior to competing in Cody.

“I’ve been having a bad Fourth (of July), and I’m glad to have it work out for once,” Schmidt said. “I haven’t been riding well and it is ruining my confidence.”

Just two hours prior to riding in Cody, he was bucked off in Red Lodge, Montana, he said. He rode in two rodeos on Thursday, one on Friday and two on Saturday.

“I’m pretty tired,” Schmidt said.

Ending Cowboy Christmas on a high-note in Cody helped restore his confidence, but a quick break back at his home ranch is next on his agenda, Schmidt said.

Last year’s Xtreme Bulls winner Brett Stall of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, was 15th in the world prior to winning the bull riding event at the Stampede rodeo with an 87-point ride on Frontier Rodeo’s Flash Boy.

“The bull bucked hard and it felt good — he fakes left, got right and got it on,” Stall said. “To win the rodeo, too, is pretty special to me. The community is always here and the stands are always full, you can’t ask for better.”

The Stampede was Stall’s fifth rodeo last weekend and his win in Cody added $9,076 to his total earnings this season.

“You always think you’re going to win, but never know what the bull’s going to do — could be good one day and (lame) the next,” Stall said. “There’s no time to think, it’s just go, go, go. You pray it all goes well and thank the good lord for the blessings.”

As for aspiring pro riders, the winning bull rider and bronc rider offered some words of wisdom:

“Don’t give up, big rodeos put pressure on something that’s a mental game,” Schmidt said.

“Fight for it, work for it — what you put into it, you’ll get out of it in this sport. Just go chase it,” Stall added.
