Lady Panthers blow past Pinedale

Posted

A few days before the season began, Powell High School head girls soccer coach Jack Haire said he wanted to score goals this season.

For one game, the Lady Panthers did just that — and at a robust rate. In their season opener, PHS overwhelmed visiting Pinedale, scoring four second-half goals to blow out the Wranglers 5-0 in Powell.

Haire introduced his team to a 2-4-4 offense this season, hoping to capitalize on the skill and experience of his two senior forwards, Aimee Kawano and his daughter Jourdyn Haire. The pair looked right at home in their coach’s offense Saturday, as each scored a pair of goals in the rout.

“I feel like we deserved [the win],” said Haire, who opened the scoring in the first 10 minutes of play with the only goal the Lady Panthers would need. “We worked really hard and we won as a team, not as individuals.”

Haire almost had a hat trick, but missed scoring her third goal in the second half when a referee ruled Pinedale’s goalkeeper had possession of the ball.

When asked if he believes his team is taking to the 2-4-4, coach Haire effectively stated the obvious.

“Jourdyn scored two goals and Aimee Kawano scored two goals ... so both of my forwards that I put in that position scored goals,” coach Haire said. “So I think it worked well.”

The offensive outburst was a positive first step for PHS, which scored just 25 goals in 19 matches last season.

“I’m super-pleased,” he said. “Our front five are fantastic and strong right now.”

Jourdyn Haire said she and her teammates struggled to adjust to their coach’s new formation early on, but believes the Lady Panthers will become more cohesive down the stretch.

“I think we did very well in the new formation, but, I think at times we were confused as to where we were supposed to go,” Haire said. “But it all worked out the way my dad wanted it to.”

It worked best for Powell (1-0) in the second half. The Lady Panthers led just 1-0 before the break, but turned it on during the final 40 minutes of action to run away with the victory.

“I think me, Jourdyn and the other midfielders are working really well together and we’re really strong,” Kawano added. “I think we’re adjusting really well.”

PHS smothered Pinedale with 11 shots on goal, while the Lady Panther defense allowed just two Wrangler shots, both of which were saved by sophomore goalkeeper Gabby Hirsch.

PHS’ defense was a bright spot last season, surrendering 1.42 goals per contest, and a year of development seems to have benefited the squad.

“The offense was great, but our defense was super-strong too,” Haire said. “It’ll be nice if we can be strong on both fronts all season.

“But overall, they did fantastic, hard to find any negatives.”

The season is in its infancy, and Haire said he still found kinks to work out in the upcoming weeks.

“We’re going to have our week lined up with some strategy, and really getting back to basics on some things like throw-ins and trapping,” Haire continued. “But they’re hungry to win, and I’m going to provide them with as much help as I can. They’re hungry, man ... they have big hearts.”

PHS will travel to Cody for a 4 p.m. matchup Thursday against the Fillies.
