Smith not rehired as volleyball coach

Cindi Smith will not coach the Powell High School volleyball team this fall.

The Powell school board voted 7-0 Tuesday night to accept the recommendation of Athletic Director Tim Wormald and not rehire Smith, who had been the head coach for 17 seasons. Smith led her teams to two state titles, most recently in 2013.

Her Lady Panthers compiled a 35-3 mark in 2014 and finished third at the state Class 3A meet in November.

The board offered no comments after it emerged from a brief closed-door executive session. It would not allow any comments on a personnel matter, so no one in the packed room  about 60 people, including Smith  spoke.

All other PHS coaches were rehired, including football coach Chanler Buck, who had the interim removed from his title.

Interesting that the board does not let the public or employee speak in advocacy of any personnel position during their public meeting. I have been around a lot of boards and the Powell school board and Superintendent are out of line not allowing the public to comment in a professional manner supporting or expressing concerns on any matter before the board on the agenda or any other area of district operations. This is your job to allow public feedback and one primary reason that the meetings require you to present an agenda to the public before the meeting. You are a public service provider to constituents. They should be entitled to speak at a designated time. Most participants know the board is not commenting on the personnel issue for legal reasons and recognize your right to conduct personnel deliberation in executive session. But that should not restrict an employee or citizen from commenting in a defined segment of time set aside for public comment at each meeting. A very poor practice going on in with the Powell school board and superintendent engagement strategies in their public meetings.
Believe it or not board, you are supervising a system that is in the people business, That is what most of your feedback is going to be about. At least take the time to listen. If the board chair cannot facilitate a public comment segment around employee advocacy they are not fit to serve as chair of the meetings or need some immediate training.

Apparently all you need to get fired in the Powell school district, is to be successful with your program and be dedicated to the girls who play for you.

I am saddened and angry that a terrible decision was made by your athletic director and your school board. Maybe when they lose their jobs( and I guarantee they will) they will remember how ms. smith must feel tonight. Happy thoughts only for ms. smith and her family at this time.
