Semi-pro football team coming to Powell

Posted

The Big Horn Basin has semi-pro football on the horizon.

A new football team is holding tryouts at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Byron High School and plans to play its home contest in Powell.

The Northern Wyoming Timberwolves are calling all prospective players, ages 18 and older, to try out for the team. The fledgling program is also searching for personnel to fill its vacant coaching staff.

The Timberwolves will join the expanding, Colorado-based American Developmental Football League, which has already added three teams this month. Those wishing to try out will be asked to pay a $25 tryout fee, and a $50 team fee if granted a roster spot.

The Timberwolves are a non-profit organization, and players and coaches will participate on a voluntary basis.

Team general manager Joshua Gruell of Byron said the formation of the new team stemmed from a desire to give “overlooked” players a chance to play football again. The ADFL is often used as a recruitment pool for larger arena football leagues.

“We want to be a part of this community and bring in players from our local communities,” Gruell said. “We want to give players another chance to play the game they love.”

If all goes to plan, Gruell said the Timberwolves’ inaugural season will commence in May.

Those looking for more information should call Gruell at 307-272-0248, or search Northern Wyoming Timberwolves on Facebook.
