Lady Panthers sweep pair of meets, including Gene Dozah Invite

The Powell High School girls swim team won both meets it competed in last weekend, including the Gene Dozah Invite held at the Powell Aquatic Center Saturday.

PHS scored 268 points to edge past rival Jackson Hole High School, which had 253 points. That’s a reversal of last year, when Jackson Hole claimed the meet title.

Lander was third with 203 points on Saturday, Worland was fourth with 173, Riverton and Cody tied for fifth with 126, Newcastle claimed seventh with 97 points and Buffalo was eighth with 89.

The Lady Panthers won the Worland Triangular Friday, scoring 129 points while Worland had 119 and Newcastle 69.

Head coach Luke Robertson said it was an impressive showing.

“Our team swam and dove very well this weekend,” he said. “Several girls swam personal bests and swam more qualifications for state.

“As far as winning both of the meets, of course we are excited; it’s always nice to come away with a win,” Robertson said. “However, our focus is always on qualifying more girls for state and improving our times.

While no one new qualified for state, several swimmers added events to their state calendar, including Tasha McKelvey and Emily Doughty in the 200 IM, Tristan Bohlman in the 500 freestyle and 100 backstroke, JuliaKay O’Neill in the 100 breaststroke, Amanda Tracy in the 100 breaststroke, 100 butterfly and 500 freestyle, Stephanie Liggett in the 100 breaststroke, Taryn Bohlman in the 100 freestyle and Aly Schneider in the 200 freestyle.

While there were no new state qualifiers over the weekend, several girls are getting closer, he said.

“Many of our athletes had good performances this weekend,” Robertson said. “One standout was Kendyl Bohlman, who swam 6 seconds faster in the 200 freestyle on Saturday than she did on Friday. Another was Dagne Stratton, who cut 29 seconds in the 500 yard freestyle from last weekend.

“Tasha McKelvey also jumps to mind, not only because she cut 4 seconds in the 200 yard freestyle on Saturday (which she won in 2:12.88), but also because she gives 100 percent on relays, often swimming a faster split in a relay than she does individually,” he said.

During the home meet, held before a loud, enthusiastic crowd, the 200 medley relay team won in a time of 2:03.30, as Tracy, SarahJean O’Neill, Liggett and McKelvey teamed up for the victory.

Powell won just one individual race and one relay, but had high placers in other events to claim the meet title.

On Friday in Worland, however, Powell dominated the meet.

Tracy won the 200 freestyle in 2:11.52, McKelvey won the 200 IM in 2:35.94, Schneider won the 50 free in 26.60, edging teammate Liggett, who hit the wall in 28.94. Tristan Bohman won the 500 free in 6:14.77, and diver Mary Lynn won the event with a score of 137.05.

Powell was second in the 200 freestyle medley, and Julia Kay O’Neill was second in the 100 breast at 1:22.52.

The swim team will host Worland at 5 p.m. Thursday.
