Racqueteers sweep half-dozen duals

Making the most of a busy homestand, Powell High School’s tennis teams went a perfect 6-for-6 last week over Cody, Jackson and Riverton.

The girls beat Cody 4-1 on Thursday while the boys bested their Park County rival 3-2. The boys and girls each beat Jackson 3-2 on Friday and Riverton 5-0 on Saturday.

“I’m very pleased with how we started,” said PHS head coach Ray Bieber, being particularly happy to see his squad take all six matches that went to a third set.

Several Panther players have opened their seasons with five straight wins: boys No. 1 singles player Cody Akin, girls No. 2 doubles players Aimee Kawano and Kelsi Barrus and No. 3 doubles players Hattie Pimentel and Madi Morrow. Meanwhile, the girls’ No. 1 doubles team — Josie Brinkerhoff and Rachel Anderson — ran its record to 4-1 with three wins last week.

Despite the success, Bieber isn’t taking anything for granted, saying the teams still have a lot to work on.

A couple difficult matches with Kelly Walsh and Natrona County high schools are looming in Casper, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively this coming Saturday.

“Sometimes the easier part of your schedule can make you look pretty good and then you hit reality,” said Bieber. “We just need to keep going well.”

For the Lady Panthers, No. 1 singles player Cydney Barrus lost 7-6(3), 6-1 to Cody’s Meg Dickerman and 6-2, 6-1 to Jackson’s Ellie Kucera before beating Riverton’s Fallyn Richmond 6-2, 6-1.

“She’s making some adjustments to her game, so she’s kind of working through a transition period,” said Bieber. “Hopefully she’ll be real competitive by the time the season ends.”

At No. 2 singles, senior Laura Bright — who Bieber said is playing well — beat Cody’s Elisha Smith 6-3, 6-3, lost to Jackson’s Karlie Rambo 6-2, 6-1, then stomped Riverton’s Andrea Roseno 6-0, 6-0.

No. 1 doubles players Josie Brinkerhoff and Rachel Anderson took down Emma Berry and Shaylea Schutzmen of Cody 6-3, 6-4. The seniors kept rolling with a 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 victory over Jackson’s Claire French and Kristina French and finished off their weekend with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Alex Verosky and Allysa McDonald. Bieber said the duo is improving.

Aimee Kawano, a senior, and Kelsi Barrus, a sophomore, beat Jessica Morales and Sarina Poto of Cody 6-1, 6-1, then came back to trump Jackson’s Ann Shea and Aliea Ednie 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. The No. 2 doubles players also triumphed over Mimi Svete and Bekah Branson of Riverton, 6-0, 6-0.

At No. 3 doubles, Pimentel and Morrow prevailed over Lucille Sax and Dorothy Shippon of Cody (6-7(6), 6-4, 7-6(4)), Stefani Santos and Claire Badda of Jackson (6-4, 6-4) and Linh Nguyen and Jessica Mahia of Riverton (6-0, 6-0).

Bieber said both the No. 2 and No. 3 squads are continuing to play well, with the No. 1 squad improving.

Despite Pimentel and Morrow’s success, Bieber said competition for the No. 3 doubles team remains fierce.

“They’re still getting challenged from below — and I think that’s going to make us better overall, just having that challenge mentality,” Bieber said.

On the boys side, No. 1 singles player Akin beat Zach Ross of Cody (6-3, 7-6(4)), Jackson Livingood of Jackson (6-4, 7-5), and David Gard of Riverton (6-4, 4-6, 6-4).

At No. 2 singles, Sterling Cozzens — who Bieber said “played really well” — lost 6-4, 6-3 to Cody’s Angelo Prosceno before bouncing back to beat Jackson’s Trevor Bizzotti 6-1, 6-1 and Riverton’s Ryan Childers 6-3, 6-1 for his first wins of the year.

Seniors Matt Brown and Jeffrey Pool rallied to beat Cody’s Daniel Woods and Tyler Vaughn 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(5). The No. 1 doubles team then lost 6-4, 6-2 to Peter Frank and Fuller Ross of Jackson and finally blanked Riverton’s Alex Nilsch and Kaleob Devries 6-0, 6-0. Bieber said they’ve really improved and “we’re excited about their chances of doing well.”

At No. 2 doubles, Kristian Stenlund and Blaze Flores lost 6-3, 6-2 to Sam Allshouse and Brad Sankey of Cody, then beat Marshall Pomeroy and Ruland Sauter of Jackson 6-3, 7-6(2), and Steve Makin and Avery Hatfield of Riverton 6-1, 6-1.

“They keep on improving,” Bieber said, praising their play.

Dallin North and Miles Rumbolz, the Panthers’ No. 3 doubles team, continued to play well, Bieber said, edging Cody’s Cooper Thompson and Bailey Loska 7-6(5), 2-6, 7-6(4), before coming up on the short end of a 6-2, 6-4 match with Jackson’s Sam Galbraith and Jack Van Holland. Riverton didn’t field a No. 3 doubles team, so North and Rumbolz won by forfeit.
