Trapper men’s rodeo 24th at CNFR

Three Trappers qualified the short round and the Northwest College men’s team finished 24th at the College National Finals Rodeo last week in Casper.

Northwest scored 197.5 points to finish just two and a half points behind University of Wyoming (200) at CNFR, which went from June 15-21.

Sophomore Dalyn Wingard reached the finals in steer wrestling and the duo of sophomores Shawn Bird and Zachary Schweigert qualified for the short go in team roping.

“We had a lot of excitement and anticipation going into the short rounds,” said NWC rodeo coach Del Nose.

Wingard finished sixth in the short round with a time of 7.5 seconds but Northwest’s team ropers failed to score. Nose said the Trappers didn’t receive any luck from the cattle draw.

“It was kind of a mixed bag of worms you might say,” Nose said. “They muscled through it into the short round and that steer got away from them and they missed.”

Bird and Schweigert finished ninth overall. They took eighth in the first go (6.6 seconds), sixth in the second (6.4) and 15th in the third (11.1).

Wingard was 12th in steer wrestling’s first round (5.8 seconds), 10th in the second (5.3) and 11th in the third (6 seconds).

Freshman Ricky Warren scored in only one of the three saddle bronc rounds but finished fourth in the nation out of a 48-rider field.

Warren scored a 78.5 in the second go, just two and a half points behind eventual champion Zeke Thurston of Sheridan.

“That was very impressive for a freshman,” Nose said.

Warren was challenging for an even higher place but failed to hang on in rounds 1 and 3.

“He was making a tremendous ride on his first horse when he was bucked off,” Nose said.

Sophomore Devon Mitchell was shut out during three rounds of bull riding. Only six of 37 riders posted scores in the first go. Ten scored in the second and third rounds.

Warren and sophomore Brady Gulde scored in the first three team-roping rounds.

The pair tied for 22nd with a score of 17 points in round 2, but posted zeros in the first and third rounds.

Sophomore Colton Redmond competed in team roping with a partner from Montana State. They finished in 8.1 seconds in round 1 but did not post a score in rounds 2 and 3.

Nose said Redmond roped the calf in all three rounds but his counterpart wasn’t as successful.

The Trappers had a rough start to the CNFR and were shut out on day 1 but had picked things up after Monday’s slack round.

“It was kind of frustrating but Ricky (Warren) brought the momentum back,” Nose said.

Warren posted his 78.5 in saddle bronc during the slack round, raising the spirits of a Northwest team unable to score on the previous day.

“We knew we had the momentum if we just kept things going,” Nose said.

With four of the Trappers’ national qualifiers returning next season, Coach Nose is optimistic about the future.

“We’re ready for next year,” he said. “We’re excited and our recruiting went well.”

The Trappers plan to take about a month off from competition but will “regroup the first of August,” Nose said.

The teams will continue to practice throughout the summer.

“We just appreciate all the support from both Cody and Powell and Northwest College and we’re excited and we’re going to keep on (carrying) tradition,” Nose said.
