Cub Scout day camp this weekend at Bighorn Canyon

Posted

Those looking for some fun in the sun this weekend in the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area should be on the lookout for an influx of Webelos, Wolves, Bears and even Tiger Cubs.

If found face-to-face with one of these clever critters, do not be alarmed, they are just part of the Big Horn District Cub Scout Day Camp.

Local Cub Scouts ages 7-10 will spend Friday and Saturday in the canyon playing games, learning dances, shooting BB guns, practicing archery, learning new languages and even taking a hot air balloon class. Opening ceremonies begin at 9 a.m. Friday, with classes, lunch and activity stations to follow until the 4 p.m. closing ceremonies.

The camping and campfire program begins at 5 p.m. Friday with a barbecue. Videos from the National Parks Service will be shown and hot air balloon rides will follow if the weather allows.

Friday culminates with two options for camping. Those who want to camp in tents will be at the NPS Visitor Center while RV camping will be at the Horseshoe Bend Campground.

Saturday morning starts with the most important event of the day — a free continental breakfast for Cubs and their families — at 7 a.m. at the Visitor Center.

An opening ceremony is scheduled for 9-9:25 a.m., and then the Scouts will embark on their group hikes.

Tiger Cubs and Wolves will head out on the 1.5 mile-long Ranger Delight Trail. Bears will hike the 1.75-miles Mouth of the Canyon Trail and Webelos will trek through the 3-mile Hillsboro Trail.

The camp concludes with a 2 p.m. closing ceremony.

Most of the activities are Scouts-only, but families are welcome to join in on Friday’s barbecue and overnight camping as well as Saturday’s group hikes and a two-hour recreation period at Horseshoe Bend.

Scouts are asked to bring their own lunch for both days.

Registration starts at 8 a.m. Friday for Scouts who pre-registered.
