Two Powell Panther boys were named finalists for the Milward Simpson Award.

Hayden Cragoe and Garrett Lynch are among the five Wyoming graduating seniors who are eligible to win the annual honor, given to the most outstanding male and female athlete in Wyoming prep sports.

The award will be announced June 21.

Cragoe quarterbacked the Powell Panthers football team to a third straight title in the fall, was a starting forward on the PHS boys’ basketball team during the winter season and was a state champion in the pole vault this spring.

Cragoe’s pole vault mark of 14 feet, 6 inches was the best in all of Wyoming’s four classes.

The two-year starting quarterback was second in both passing and all-purpose yards in his final season with the Panthers. Cragoe threw 21 touchdowns to just seven interception on his way to 1,704 passing yards. He added another 10 scores and 281 yards on the ground. As a free safety Cragoe had 14 solo and 15 assisted tackles, three pass break ups and two interceptions.

Cragoe was Powell’s leading rebounder with an average of 5.8 a game. He was third in scoring with 8.1 points per game. He also led the team in assists (64) and steals (62).

Cragoe rounds out his year as a starting pitcher and shortstop for the Powell Pioneers American Legion baseball team, which is not affiliated with Wyoming High School Athletic Association.

Lynch was a key two-way player for the Panthers football team. He was used as an all-purpose runner, blocker and pass-catcher on offense and was a force as an edge rusher and run-stopper on defense. Lynch, who will join the University of Wyoming track team in the fall, played for Cody’s indoor track and field squad in the winter before coming back to Powell to win state titles in the discus and shot put in the spring.

Lynch set the Class 3A shot put record with a throw of 59 feet, 5 inches. He also broke the PHS discus record with a throw of 179 feet, 7 inches in Cody May 10.

Cragoe’s father, Rob, won the first Milward Simpson Award in 1976.
