The Powell Aquatic Center’s leisure pool is scheduled to reopen Saturday after a two-week closure due to a broken boiler.
Admission will be free Saturday to celebrate the PAC’s four-year anniversary.
Replacement parts needed to fix the boiler are still en route but should arrive Friday, in time to heat the pool to acceptable temperatures.
Powell Aquatic Center staff estimated the boiler’s burners disintegrated about three weeks ago, which is when the pool’s temperature started to gradually drop from its usual 90 degrees. Once the water reached 75 degrees about a week later, the pool, according to state policy, had to close.
New burners, which ignite the pool’s heater, arrived Monday but cannot be installed without a new refractory kit, which is on track to arrive Friday.
“As long as the parts arrive we’ll be open,” said PAC co-director Angela Frank.
Fellow director Tanya Fawcett-Kay estimated it will take at least a full day for the water to reach 90 degrees, but said once the thermometers reach the high-70s and above, the pool can reopen “pending no unforeseen circumstances.”
The refractory kit surrounds the burners and keeps them from melting surrounding equipment. The previous refractory kit was melted through while staff attempted to restart the broken boiler.
The PAC will also offer membership sign-up specials on Saturday. Patrons who become members on Saturday will be given a free punch pass, good for 10 admissions into the pool. The pool will be open noon to 5 p.m.
