JuliaKay O’Neill broke two records, including one of her own, as the Powell Middle School track team competed in Burlington Saturday.

The eighth-grader bested her own time in the 1600-meter run by more than 11 seconds and out-jumped a long jump record that was twice as old as she is. O’Neill also won the 800-meter run and was part of the first-place 4x100-meter relay team.

O’Neill’s time of 5:40.41 in the 1600 shattered her previous record of 5:51.53, set earlier this season. Her jump of 15 feet, 2 1/4 inches broke Angela Bessler’s 1985 record of 14 feet, 11 inches.

The 800-meter medley relay team also set a new Powell Middle School record. Maddy Hanks, Kooper Stringer, McKenna Hanson and O’Neill finished in 2:01.66, breaking the record of 2:12.80 set by K. Schweitzer, N. Herd, A. Brinkerhoff and T. Hernandez in 1978.

Hanks cleared 6 feet, 5 inches to take first in the pole vault for the eighth-grade girls, and Kodi Stringer won the shot put with a throw of 27 feet, 5 1/2 inches.

The 4x100 relay team of Hanks, Hanson, Kodi Stringer and O’Neill won in 56.80.

The eighth-grade boys came home with five first-place finishes, including two from their relay teams.

Antonio Garza ran the 75-meter hurdles in 11.52 seconds and 200-meter hurdles in 28.51 to win both events.

Brooks Asher won the shot put with a throw of 36 feet.

Jesse Erickson, Charlie Hall, Zach Meredith and Eyob Robirds combined to win the 4x400-meter relay in 4:39.59.

Asher, Garza, A.J. Lewis and Jon Moore won the 800-meter medley relay in 1:52.12.

Dalton McMillan was the only seventh-grade boy to win an individual event. McMillan’s time of 1:02.9 won the 400-meter dash.

The seventh-grade boys’ 4x400-meter relay team of Wyatt Decker, Joe Rogers, Alan Merritt and Reece Hackenberg placed first with a time of 4:55.75.

The seventh-grade girls had one individual and one relay win as well.

Sierra Sanders’ throw of 25 feet, 9 inches was good for first in the shot put.

The team of Mollie Kissner, Jasmyne Lensegrav, Rylee Ramsey and Caitlyn Miner won the 4x400-meter relay in 4:59.81.

The Cub girls combined to take first overall with 311 points. Team results for the boys were not available.
