Track excels at 3 weekend meets

The Powell High School track and field team stood tall despite being stretched thin as the squad was split during three meets in two days.

Four Panthers placed first at the Wyoming Track Classic at Kelly Walsh High School in Casper on Friday.

Senior thrower Garrett Lynch took first in the shot put (55 feet, 2 inches) and discus (168 feet, 11 inches) against the top competition in Wyoming.

Senior Tori Sleep also won the shot put with a throw of 41 feet, 10 inches.

Junior Kalei Smith won the 110-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 15.25 seconds.

The Panthers who competed at the Classic stayed in Casper for the Kelly Walsh Invitational on Saturday.

Senior Danna Hanks won the 100-meter hurdles in 16.29 and finished second in the 300-meter hurdles in 49.34, which was good for second.

Senior Hayden Cragoe had two runner-up finishes Saturday. He took second in the pole vault with a personal-best mark of 14 feet and was then second in the long jump (21 feet, 1 inch).

Anissa Warner matched her career-high by clearing 5 feet, 1 inch in the high jump to take second. The sophomore also took second in the long jump with a mark of 16 feet, one-half inch.

Senior Brendon Phister was second in the 300-meter hurdles (42.14) and fourth in pole vault (13 feet, 6 inches).

The bulk of the Powell squad stayed in Park County to compete at the Meeteetse Invitational.

The Powell girls took second overall while the boys finished in seventh.

Sophomore Kalina Smith won a hat trick of events with top performances in the 200-meter dash (27.93), 100-meter hurdles (16.70) and the long jump (15 feet, 11 and one-quarter inches).

Junior SarahJean O’Neill was first in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:36.79.

On the boys’ side, Cody Akin ran to a pair of third-place finishes in the 800-meter run (2:17.54) and 1600-meter run (5:11.72).
