A Lovell man coaching a Powell youth soccer team was relieved of his duties after punching an opposing coach during a match Saturday.

Heart Mountain United secretary Susan Bauer told the Tribune Monday that Shane Kannard was let go according to Wyoming Soccer Association bylaws.

“The Heart Mountain United soccer board has taken the appropriate actions to handle the situation as it was recommended by the state of Wyoming,” Bauer said.

Wyoming Soccer Association president Casey Nix said the incident is still being investigated and it is unclear at this point whether any further action will be taken.

“We’re definitely looking into the situation and moving from there,” Nix said.

Kannard punched Sheridan coach Coree Kelly after a Sheridan player was called for a foul during a game at Mentock Park in Cody around 1 p.m. Saturday. Kannard was cited for simple battery by Cody Police and was ejected from the game by tournament officials, according to a Cody Police Department release.

Kelly sustained minor injuries.

In a comment Kannard left on a Facebook post related to the incident, the U14 coach wrote that he did “regret what happened” and that he was defending himself from Kelly, “who grabbed me with a force that I believed was intent to cause harm.”

Kannard said he and Kelly were involved in a verbal confrontation at a tournament in Casper in early April. Kannard wrote that after he voiced concerns to referees about Kelly’s team’s “dirty playing,” Kelly pushed him and used vulgar language. It did not escalate into a physical altercation.
